Fellow Ferrarian's I searched the forum and found some information but wanted to ask this. I hear a distinctive ticking sound like an exhaust leak. I have head Exhaust manifolds repaired and will replace them shortly with most likely Capristo. The sound rises and falls with the engine revs. Now the goofy part. It will tick, tick, tick in rhythm with the motor, then suddenly tick rapidly not in sync with the motor RPM. My thought is that rules out an exhaust leak. The sound is like that of a fuel injector ticking, but the motor runs fine. Is this some type of fuel pressure regulator or early warning sign of an injector going bad? I don't want to fix if it's not broken. Thanks, Boaf 1999 355F1 Spider, 42K on the clock.
My guesses are: 1) failed headers, especially if they are stock. 2) leaking header gaskets 3) a loose fitting of the header to the head 4) secondary air injection leak 5) leaking exhaust bypass valve 6) leaking muffler Get a mechanics stethoscope, or a long tube you can hold next to your ear, and listen to find exactly wear the ticking is coming from.
I had a similar sound in mine and it ended up being a bad valve shim in my 348. Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk
Get at it with an automotive stethoscope. Also, to check for exhaust leaks, rent a smoke machine from a party center and hook it up to your exhaust outlet. Alternately, use a shop vac on blow and check joints for leaks with windex or a little soapy solution.
Ernie, Itsablurr, Davheedin, Yelcab Thanks for the guidance. I have a mechanics stethoscope back home, and Trailer-ing the car back to PA next week. Finally will be able to access my tools and lift. Could be an exhaust leak exhaust (had the manifolds welded) but not sure why it would change speed of ticking when RPM's are the same. Will keep everyone posted within the next 2 weeks when I scope it. It will be a treat to be out of Florida during the hurricane season. 4 inches a day of rain is not Spyder weather. Bob
