Unfortunately this the way a " good guy " is treated when they can't find any dirt on a person. No wonder this world's a mess, when a real role model is dismissed, and wife beating, drug taking players are idolized.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) -- Tim Tebow has been criticized for years about his quarterback skills, his arm and how he throws.

He refuses to accept anyone calling him a quitter or phony.

The New York Jets backup quarterback insisted Wednesday that he didn't ask out of running the team's wildcat plays last week, but acknowledged what he said in a meeting with coach Rex Ryan might have been misinterpreted as such.

''I never said, 'Hey, I don't want to do anything or I won't do anything,''' Tebow said. ''That wasn't the talk at all. He knows that, and everybody on this team knows that. I'd never not do something if I was asked, and I think that's what's disappointing about the whole situation, people saying, 'You quit,' or, 'You didn't do this.' It was not it at all.

''It was just me asking to get an opportunity to play the position I love, which is quarterback. It wasn't me asking out of anything.''

Last Tuesday, Ryan chose to go with third-stringer Greg McElroy over Tebow in place of the benched Mark Sanchez for Sunday's game against the San Diego Chargers. After hearing the news Tebow went to Ryan to discuss the situation and told him he wanted to be ''a regular quarterback.''

''I was definitely disappointed and frustrated,'' Tebow said.

ESPN New York first reported Sunday that Tebow had then asked out of the wildcat, and a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed that to The Associated Press. But Tebow thinks it was a situation in which he wishes he was ''more clear'' when he initially spoke with Ryan.

Tebow realized that Ryan might have misinterpreted what he said when they met when he wasn't in wildcat packages during practice Wednesday and Thursday, and then sat down with the coach last Friday to clear the air. ''I just asked for an opportunity to play quarterback and he definitely understood that,'' Tebow said, ''and then Friday, I went up to him again and reiterated that, 'Hey, I'll do anything for this team like I have all year.'''

While Ryan never confirmed or denied the reports, the coach said, ''If I would have asked Tim to play in anything, Tim would have gone into the game and done that.''

Tebow never played in the Jets' 27-17 loss to the Chargers, as wide receiver Jeremy Kerley handled the majority of snaps in the wildcat package.

More than anything else, Tebow said, he's most disappointed by the attacks on his character and reputation during the last few days - adding that his Christmas ''wasn't the best'' because of all the talk about how he let his team down.

''When people talk about how you play football and how much, that's one thing,'' Tebow said. ''That really doesn't bother me. I think the only thing that's been disappointing these last few days and frustrating is people saying, 'Oh, you quit on your team or you're not a good teammate.'

''For people to not know the situation and then start to bash your character and then say you're a phony or you're a fake or you're a hypocrite, I think that's what's disappointing and that's what's frustrating. Your character is who you are as a man, and that's a lot more important.''

Tebow later added: ''You work your whole life to build a reputation, and then people try to bring you down when they don't understand even what happened. It's disappointing.''

Miami center Mike Pouncey, who played with Tebow at the University of Florida, walked through the Dolphins' locker room Wednesday saying: ''Free Tim Tebow!''

That has been the sentiment among Tebow's many supporters, yet the popular backup
has had a minimal role in the Jets' offense. He hasn't played a snap in four of the last five games, partially due to him recovering from two broken ribs, but he hasn't been the dynamic addition the Jets expected him to be. New York will either trade or release Tebow after one season.

When asked if he wanted to return to the Jets next season, Tebow said: ''I'm looking forward to this game vs. Buffalo, and we've got to pull together and get a win.''

Not exactly a ringing endorsement, especially from a guy who repeatedly said he was ''excited'' to be a member of the Jets when he was acquired from Denver last March.

''It's hard for Timmy, man,'' Pouncey said last week. ''Timmy is a great player. He's a great friend of mine. I wish him nothing but success, and I know he's going through a hard time right now. I had the opportunity to talk to him after our last game and you could tell that he was upset and sad that he wasn't the starting quarterback up there. But I know that once he gets his opportunity he'll do the best he can.

''If the opportunity is not in New York with the Jets, it will be somewhere else. He's a guy who is never going to give up on anything, and I know he wants to be a starting quarterback in this league. And that day will come again for him.''

This is the NFL, not a "Gentlemen of the Year" contest.

Winning games trumps all; drugs, prostitution, and being a nice guy but a terrible QB

Always liked him. He was very fun to watch last year.

That being said, I think everyone now accepts that he is not a good NFL quarterback. Although it might be interesting to see him starting in Jacksonville next year, I hope it doesn't happen. He had a magical season with the Broncos. I don't think he would have that again. More likely to be a train wreck.

He beat the Steelers in the playoffs last year. He is legit, but definitely not the best QB in the league, by far. Someone needs to give him a proper chance again. Rex Ryan is a fool.

I went to one of his book signings last year mostly to get a book to give to my Nephew for xmas as he went to UF the same time as Tewbow and got to experience his school becoming the National Champions. Super long line at the book store with wrist bands given to the amount they thought he could sign in his scheduled two hour appearance. I had a wrist band so I was set but the line snaked outside and around the parking lot with only hope they would get in. Probably 1,500 to 2,000 in line. Tebow came in and signed away and got to all those with a wrist band and then some before his two hours were up. He then saw all the people that had been waiting for hours still in line and said he would stay and try and get the rest. I've been to a lot of autograph sessions and that rarely happens. Sometimes its just not possible due to scheduling but other times the celebrity just doesn't care. I watched him as they tried to pull the plug and he said no, I want to try and get to them all. I have no doubt he is a standup guy.

After that came his run at Denver and I thought he was exciting to watch. He really pulled off some crazy wins and I became even more of a fan. Plenty of people were absolutely sure he wouldn't even get drafted let alone play the QB position. He helped turn Denver's season around and got them to the playoffs. He doesn't deserve to be in the position he is in now and I hope some team will find a way to make use of his abilities. He just needs more time and NFL experience.

I think he could be a player in another position, but not quarterback.

One thing that does annoy me about Tebow haters is that they call him a phony. That **** pisses me off. Anyone with half a brain knows that the media have had people trying to find some kind of dirt on him for years. You are not under this heavy of a media watch and not have something "bad" come up by now.

I know he's changed over to CBS radio I believe. Has his show changed at all, or is he still playing the same sounds from 1998? I enjoyed his show, but the schtick got old.

Nobody could say it any better, kudos.

Jim Rome.... I was watching the 'Chrissie' show on TV in the 80's, does anyone remember that? LOL

I listen to KLAC on 'I heart radio' on the internet at work, Jay Mohr took Rome's time slot, I had no idea Rome was on somewhere else but it doesn't matter. Jay Mohr is quite different, I can't say if he is any better or any worse than Rome. To me, most of these guys are the same, they ALL discuss the same exact thing(s) every day, so to that point it gets old.

Time in to the Ravens-Broncos game, and please tell me if you think Tebow can make half the throws that Manning made, and both the TD throws that Manning made.

I turned on the game just in time to see Manning throw a stupid pass for an interception that ended his team's season. :p

Manning is one of the greatest QBs to play that position and nobody thinks Tebow is better. Denver made a great move to get Manning and it is understandable that Tebow had to go.
The Jets are the one that really needed a lift in the QB position and failed to find a way to utilize Tebow in the same way Denver did in the previous season.

If a team would utilize Tebow the same way Cam, RG III, Colin and Russell Wilson are used, he might have a chance, but he needs to be surrounded by TALENT, and that just won't happen in NY, Jax, AZ, or any other team that 'needs' a QB because those teams also NEED SEVERAL top-rate skill position players.
Even at that I just don't see him being am elite NFL QB capable of taking a team to the playoffs every year and to a SB win or two.

Imagine the top eight NFL teams right now, today, and now imagine plugging Tebow in as the starting QB, what do you think their record would be? New England from 12-4 to what, 9-7 maybe? Atlanta from 13-3 to around 8-8 or so, GB to 6-10 maybe?

When Tebow wins a Superbowl like Manning did, then we can debate this further...until then, let's see how many teams line up for his services this summer (my guess is zero)

By the way, I don't like Manning - he puts up great regular season stats, but he isn't even in the same class as Joe Montana (who is the best ever).

    1) Tebow won a playoof game for Denver, Peyton?

    2) Manning chokes in the playoffs? He won a SB, that's enough.

    1) Tebow is a great player, he's not an NFL QB that can do it all, but you MUST give the guy some credit - he is a WINNER and can be an asset to any team in the league.

    2) Montana 'best ever' is debatable, kinda like the same debate on Schumacher/Senna/Moss, etc. you look at just the numbers (rings), other folks look at other things.

I am not so convinced New England will beat Baltimore next week.

Well said, although I disagree about him not being an NFL QB, I think he needs work, but he could be. I thought the commentary from Steve Young was extremely telling.

Young saw many similarities between he and Tebow, especially when he was a younger QB. It took a coach (Walsh) and a mentor (Montana) to mold him into a QB that could be productive in the league, and he felt that the same thing needs to happen for Tebow.

I met him in NY, he's a great guy. He has a good attitude and he's physically capable, he just needs a team and someone to tutor him...
