Hello All, I'm sure this one has been covered, but if you search for 308 exhaust it refers you to almost every post ever made. I'm in need of a new exhaust and I am not sure what to do. Tubi, Ansa, cats, no cats (I have a Euro and don't need them), Magnaflow, etc!!!

I prefer Tubi. Best to find one that is used because of the high price for a new one. I like the deep growl at slow speeds and the ear shattering wide open throttle. More race car sound. Not for everyone, but I like to hear the engine. No radio in mine.

Do you have to switch out the headers to put on a Tubi?

I have a 1983 308 GTSi QV (US version) with euro headers and euro Tubi. Strict emission testing here in Colorado requires cats. Had mini hi-flow cats grafted into the Tubi by Scuderia Rampante. The craftmanship is fantastic, toned down the WOT scream to a more tolerable level, and feels like it has better low end torque.

Larini makes a great exhaust system for the 308 and the added benefit is it looks amazing with the Euro rear valance

No. I just removed the stock muffler and installed the Tubi. I only changed the headers while the engine was out for rebuilding the trans. Tubi fit on perfect with no modifications.

you are right, down low and at idle it sounds very deep, mid revs are pronouced warble, and redline it more of a howl than a scream.

I have it on my *Euro* GT4 and the sound is like no other. I have guys in 360's asking me how come my car sounds so much better than theirs! :)

You can get an idea of the sound here:

You have to listen around my neighbor kid talking and the bad *ss Ford GT but you'll get the idea....:)

Brian, perhaps check out some of the clips on YouTube for different ferraris with different exhaust systems. If you do go with a tubi or larini or another good quality non-OEM system be ready to experience a fair bit more noise inside the cabin as well as outside. On a long trip it can get tiring, particularly if the system sets up a booming in the cab. If you live in a State that has emission testing, including inspection of the components such as California then you'll likely have to keep the cats on the car (even if it is a euro, in which case you might have to put cats on even if it didn't come with them originally).

It's really a personal choice - there are lots of good systems with different levels of sound and configuration. Good luck!

Totally agree with Cliff. I drove my 328 from Vegas to MD - around 2700 miles - in 3 days. The exhaust was oem and even at that, I needed earplugs or Bose noise cancelling headphones (illegal but nobody stopped me) for substantial periods to retain my hearing and sanity.

Obviously, if fairly short trips are the norm, it probably doesn't matter much as far as a louder exhaust. But loud pipes can get pretty annoying after the new wears off... ;)

I put a Tubi in my 1988 Mondial 3.2, AND THE CHANGE IS AMAZING!!! It sounds great at high revs but isn't a lot louder below about 3,500 RPM. It was very easy to change (be sure to get new bolts, springs, etc before diving in). Simultaneously, I also installed a test pipe in place of the cat converter. The difference is amazing ... feels like 25 - 30 HP. I know this sounds implausible, but it's true. Maybe my cat was clogging up (it had 78,000 miles on it). I like previous posters' idea about listening to different systems via youtube. Good luck!

"feels like 25 - 30 HP. I know this sounds implausible, but it's true"

And I've got perpetual motion machines that I'm letting go cheap! :)

But seriously, unless your oem muffler/cat had rotted out and was causing some sort of system obstruction, there is no power to be gained by replacing them.

We used to do tons of dyno testing and never found ANY HP gain worth talking about when an oem muffler(s) cat(s) in good condition were replaced by aftermarket versions. Once we saw a 5 HP gain on a 400+HP engine but normally there was anything from 10 less HP (yep, LESS) to 2-3HP more. That was it as far as power. If you want/like the sound of the aftermarket version, that's an entirely different issue.

If you want stainless, I am with Jim on the x-ost or Nuvolari. If you want Ansa Sport, do it. I will not let go of my Ansa sport and someone is going to have to pryse it out of my cold dead hands to make me get rid of it. Ansa is the epitome of pre '80s Ferrari

Ansa Marmitte was and is the original supplier of exhausts for Ferrari. Ansa was also the first to offer a 'Sports' system with livlier sound and supposed better flow. NOS Ansa Sport exhausts for 60's and some 70's vintage cars are highly coveted, and Gary Bobileff has even made a business out of reconditioning original Ansa exhausts as owners very much like myself have become rediculously attached to their original Sports systems. For many years Ansa ceased making several models of Ferrari exhausts, and it was only recently that they began to manufacture them once again (once they were bought out by another company is when, but not sure). Ansa is also known for the little shield stickers on the pipe tips carrying their name. I would put the sound decibel range between stock exhaust and a Tubi. All of them push different buttons for everyone. I will see about posting a vid of mine so you can get an idea.

The first pic is Barry's beautiful glass GTB, and the second is my '76 GTB. Both have Euro rear end treatment and the same exhaust. The stickers were taken off mine years ago by the PO. Time for some new ones...

Oh yeah, What's the Euro rear end treatment? Mine is a Euro, but I don't know the difference in the rear end other than the lack of a "diaper". Thanks Again, Brian

Yep Euro treatment is basically removing the 'diaper' and replacing with a fabricated thin painted valance panel to bridge the gap between the two wheel exits. I am not sure of any Ansa dealers. Call Ansa (they have in country operations and website) and they can direct you. I believe the cost is around $1700. I think Nick's forza ferrari sells them......

For documentation purposes, who is offering the Ansa and about how much? I really dig both. Just need to ask yourself, stainless or classic?

If you want to hear mine go to youtube and search ferrari 308 Magnaflow. I have two there, one with me blipping throttle and one coming up a hill.

It sounds even better live. Sick. Seriously.

I have listened to this question for 4 years and heard every possible recommendation.

The bottom line is you need to drive cars with various exhausts, for a while, to see if you can tolerate the pitch and volume of the sound. an exhilerating blast around the block doesn't do it - just about anything will sound good/different - run it down the road and freeways for a bit to see if you feel comfortable with the character and volume of sound.

You can pay 10% of the car's cost for a muffler - comes with a great name - but do you want to drive 500 miles with it, or pay that much for it.

Barring killer deals on used stuff, your best bang for the buck is likely to be getting one made up at a quality exhaust shop, using Magnaflow, (single or twin) or flowmaster mufflers as a starting point. You can significantly change the sound by installing resonator tips.

I have a dual inlet/dual outlet flowmaster with twin resonator tips, (cost about $600) and my wife wears ear plugs on trips - I am very happy with the sound but have driven very few custom equipped cars.

You really need to test drive a set up to see if it is "right" for you.

    hth,
    chris
