Not that I think that this is an affair of state...but I am curious how the ones telling us that the FIA has to penalize Vettel for calling out Charlie and not apologizing immediately after the "road rage" (because it undermines the authority of them) think the FIA should react on Lewis liking/agreeing that they "are a bias set of fools" in public.

Does the leader has to justify his pace behind the safety car? I have never heard of that.

I think not. And driving "erratically" is what they ALL have to do to keep some heat in their tyres. That means swerving excessively, accelerating suddenly, and braking violently to maintain some temperature in the envelopes.

Usually drivers keep a safe distance from the car in front, not to be caught by a sudden deceleration. In this case, one of them didn't. It was a safety car incident; not the first one, and not the last one to be caught out.

Well, if the leader does not have to justify his driving behind the safety car, why was there an inverstigation into the telemetry??? FIA could have simply said that the leader is always right according to you...it is simply not true!

Point is: the FIA stated that the driving of Lewis was not "erratically" because all the restart were the same and this is actually not the case as one can see in the graph!
And I can imagine what my Physics Prof would have said if I declared the graph of restart 2 a "steady" deceleration or said "a consistent pace with a consistent deceleration" :D

One can see that the restart in question is the only one Lewis did feint a move at the apex...yet GordonC still insists they are all "very similar"...

Vettel crashgate over now says Lauda

Mercedes chiefs have called an end to the Sebastian Vettel 'crashgate' saga.

After the now apologetic Ferrari driver essentially escaped further sanction for having been found by the FIA to have steered deliberately into Lewis Hamilton in Baku, the controversy continued in the wake of the FIA ruling.

Hamilton reportedly 'liked' on Instagram a post on which a fan said he has "lost all respect for the FIA, Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel".

But Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said: "We have moved past that moment now and it is a closed chapter."

He also said "great respect between Mercedes and Ferrari" is intact after the drama.

So while some fans and insiders reacted with dismay to the FIA's leniency, others welcomed the ruling.

"I am very happy that there is no further punishment," said Red Bull's Dr Helmut Marko, who brought Vettel into F1.

"It was just an emotional reaction to Hamilton's strategic manouvre," he told Austrian broadcaster Servus TV.

And F1 chief executive Chase Carey was quoted as saying: "A little drama on the racetrack is not harmful."

Even Mercedes team chairman Niki Lauda, who was earlier so critical of Vettel, vowed to move on in the wake of the FIA decision.

"I criticised Vettel because he did not see his mistake," he told Bild newspaper.

"Now that he has apologised, the incident for me is over."

Checking the telemetry wasn't necessary. Hamilton didn't commit any offense.

The stewards gave Vettel a 10 sec penalty for what he did after the initial contact.

Overtaking the leader during a safety car period, and crashing into him, that's the offence!

Actually, the "leader" being a snake is the real offense, and if they didn't all know that, SB would have be more heavily penalized.

Bottom line, some of you insist that SB is a horrible person who should be tossed out of F1. The rest of us think Hamilton is a dirty driver and the FIA is conveniently looking the other way and has been for years. Neither of us will change our minds. If you want to support Hamilton and his tricks, I suggest you do it on a Hamilton/Mercedes forum. He's not going to get a lot of support here and for good reason.

Yep, LH played in a grey area.

Vettel overreacted, and got the right penalty.

People are still arguing over things they apparently do not understand. No one will convince the other on the subject, case closed.

So, it's OK to overtake during a safety car period, gesticulate to the driver and make contact with his car. It that was you are saying?

What "offense" has Hamilton committed in this particular instance?

I may add that I blamed Hamilton for his aggressive moves, and many contacts in the past, notably with his team mate Rosberg. But here, I am at lost to understand what he did wrong.

Obviously they though different or else they would have not done it..
Nobody questions that...why are you mixing the two things? Only because one (Vettel) did something wrong does not mean that the other (Hamilton) did nothing wrong at all!!!
Vettel is tackled for driving to close behind the leader while Perez was even told by the pit to close the gap further...

Well...after Lewis instagramm-episode I am not surprised that Lauda does not want to talk about all that anymore or this might end up on the table at the end...

I never said that Vettel should be thrown out of F1, and I also think that Hamilton has played some aggressive moves in this carer. I judge the incidents, blow by blow, not according to some code.

I am not focussing who they are driving for Ferrari or Mercedes, or Red Bull, or McLaren, because I don't have that sort of tribal instinct. I don't support a particular driver or a certain team. I am a fan of racing, and I look forward to see a good race, with no prejudice as who "should" win to suit my taste.

I remember that Vettel was considered what you call "the enemy" and criticised on this forum when he was driving for Red Bull against Alonso who was at Ferrari then; now he drives for Ferrari, so he is the new flavour of the month. Whatever ...

As for changing my mind, I do it all the time. If a driver delivers a good race, I am all for it; equally, if I detect a fault I blame its author, regardless who he is. Vettel has a good chance of being WDC this year, but not by giving points away like he did in Baku.

In fact, personality wise, I would chose Vettel over Hamilton any day, but I am not blind by sense of loyalty to any driver to absolve his mistakes.

    Let me be unequivocal here:

This is not the position of FerrariChat. This is a Ferrari-oriented website as a whole but the F1 subforum is a general F1 discussion area that is open to the participation of fans from all marques. Given that the rest of the site is Ferrari-oriented, it is not surprising that an overwhelming majority of participants are Tifosi, but this is not a Tifosi exclusive area. All these calls for others to log off and go to Mercedes websites are examples of piling on users for sharing minority opinions and are expressly forbidden in the established rules:

If you try to drive those with opinions that differ from your own off the site, you will incur a stern response from the moderators. If you only want to talk to Ferrari owners to the exclusion of all others, I suggest you do it in the Owners Forum.

    Sincerely,
    Andrew.

Under safety car, you are supposed to maintain a safe distance with the car in front, but not create a gap.

Is that too difficult to understand?

So what is "a safe distance" in your opinion?
To be far enough away when the one in front of you does not accelerate, lifts or slams the brake? I am curious what your definition is and please do not tell me a safe distance is to be able the stop no matter what happens in front of you because then we can stop racing in general...with or without safety car!

I just want to be clear. Suggesting that Hamilton fans post their undying support on forums dedicated to Hamilton is a problem but calling people racists for not liking the way he drives isn't a problem?

During a safety car period, the race is neutralised. The drivers are not racing.

Hence observing a safe distance is perfectly feasible.

It's not the first time that a driver wrongly anticipates the move of the driver in front, and gets it wrong.

Extreme opinions, one way or the other, will lead to heated arguments.

But surely people should be allowed to give an opinion, without the need to swear allegiance to Ferrari as you imply.

Let's not confuse fan with fanatic.

Wrong...as soon as the lights of the safety car are out the cars are de facto racing as they try to get an advantage over the opponents. Not being allowed to overtake does not mean there is no racing going on. So there are rules for both the one leading and the one following and obviously by ramming Lewis Vettel neglected the ones for the guy following but that does not explain whether Lewis did neglect the ones for the leader ;)
    And this was investigated!

I addressed the concerns and reports about racism immediately and very seriously, yet privately, to prevent the discussion of it from derailing the forum.

    All the best,
