Hi Guys, I have a 1978 308 GTB and have a manual for the car, however, the manual show the car having two distributors, my 308 only has the one distributor does anyone have a copy showing the instructiion for setting up the one distributor, any information on setting up the timing would be really helpful. Kind regards, Sharpy
(If stock) It sounds like you have the wrong OM for your year/model/version (euro carbed 308 have only 1 distributor): If you have a points-based distributor, the OM you need is 116/75 which you can get here: http://www.ferraridatabase.com/The_Downloads/Manuals_Owners.htm (it's the one called "Owners Manual 308 GTB 116 1975") If you have the later "electronic"-type distributor, the OM you need is 155/78 (it's the one called "Owners Manual 308 GTBGTS 1978")
Hi Steve, Firstly, thank you very much for your reply, I do have the correct owner manual, The owner manual does not go into any detail or show any instruction how to set up the the distributor. The manual I was referring to was the full workshop manual which I had downloaded from the internet, this showed how to set up the two distributors but not the single distributor which I have. The car I have has points based distributor. Kind regards Sharpy.
My bad for the confusion of OM vs WSM. I can't recall ever seeing such instructions for a single distributor with two R1 points inside. Unfortunately, F structures their repair documentation like you are a shop with a complete set of all the documents so they often only describe how to repair/fix a particular system once (and then don't repeat it for later models that use the same system). I can't ever recall seeing a WSM specific to the euro carbed 308, but maybe someone will know if it exists (or if the "information" is only in an older V12 model WSM). The OM does give the dwell value for each point set. The other requirement is that the two point sets are mounted 135 mechanical degrees apart (which gives a functional 45 deg electrical offset) and the rotor is pointing at the appropriate contact inside the cap when that particular point set opens (which gets a little tricky with the double-ended rotor as the plug wire mounting order around the dist cap does not match the firing order).
I hope this information from the 155-78 OM is helpful. It covers the single distributor cars. I should add there is a breaker point model which has a single set of breaker points for each of the two coils, and a magnetic sensor variant distributor with each of the 2 cold being driven by an electronic sensor. The full schematic for both are found on page 76. You have perhaps gotten frightened by the dual points complexity of the twin distributors but the single is considerably simpler.
