timing belt pad

I think in the earlier thread we decided that since there is apparently no factory spec for this, it should be installed with 1-2mm clearance. It's obviously a BAD idea to install it with no clearance, it chews up the backside of the belt and wears the finish off the shoe. If someone can come with a factory recommendation, GREAT!

 

I set mine to 1mm. When I 1st removed the top section of the cam cover on the LH bank, the pad was installed backwards. When I swapped it around, I slid a 1mm feeler gauge in there and set the "gap".
Have not checked it since, but I assume there are no issues.

For whatever its worth FBB I used to set mine at 2mm, enough to keep the belt down, if in fact it would ever move off of the sprocket, but not to low as to rub on belt pad. When I looked at the belt and the way the system works I couldn't see how or why they are even there. I actually painted the bottom of mine to see if they ever touched the belt. On the next belt service paint was not touched, so as I said before I'm not sure why they are there?

 

Hey PAP, you made my day! When I did my major I found the pads installed backwards. Thought I was the only 1! Set mine with virtually no gap. Will pull the covers to see if they are "shredding" my belt.

 

What document shows the orientation??? Maybe they are NOT backwards !

 

Funny that. I only had the LH bank installed backwards. Well, it could have been both now, I forget. It is in the correct way now, with 1mm gap. Set them both to 1mm.

 

1 mm seems to be the consensus - if not this happens

Gothspeed, if I recall correctly there is a detailed diagram of the front view of a 348 motor in the technical book and possibly the workshop manual. Details the belt/ pulley system etc. I remember scratching my head looking at the diagram and my partially disassembled motor thinking something just isn't as it should be here! The shreds of rubber in the belt housings also hinted at a problem!

 

There was another thread here somewhere, discussing this. There IS a correct way to fit them. Mine were installed backwards. All ok now.

 

Just wanted to make sure so when I get my 348, I will know how these go !!!!
