Does a new timing belt need to be retensioned after 1000 miles or so?
What car? 456, 550 have tensioners that are locked in position at a tension set by the mechanic. WSM specifically warns against any retensioning of the belts once the intial tension is applied and the tensioner is set and torqued. I have excerpted the WSM pages here that are relevant from the 456 manual: Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Abe- In keeping with my policy of always letting everyone know when I am full of crap, the maintenance schedule on our V12s (456-575) does say to check and adjust the belt tension when the car was new at an interval varying from 1200-1500 miles on the 456 to 5000 miles on the Maranellos. Nothing after that in the schedule. This begs the question from a pro like Brian of whether new belts should be retensioned after 1200- 5000 miles? Beats me. Have never heard of anybody doing it.
