I am just finishing a major and have got to the point where I am putting the timing shoes/followers back in. One I can keep off the belt about a milimeter, which I understand is the correct position. I believe this is done with tension on the bolt that goes through the shoe. The other one is loose no matter how tight I clamp it. The shoe simply flops around and would simply lay on the belt the whole time.

Any advise on what's going on here? I assume it isn't supposed to rub on the belt. Actually, I'm not even sure what their purpose is? If the belt ever reached them you would already have some serious problems, no??

It sounds like the bolt is bottoming out before enough tension is put on the shoulders of the follower to bring it under tension. Possibly the shoulders are worn causing this problem. Be careful and don't over tighten and strip the threads. Both shoes need to be set at approx 1 mm. gap. Not sure of the design intention other than helping keep the belt in place.

The bolts are different lengths. I suspect you have them mixed up.

This must be somewhat common with a not so knowledgeable shop. Whoever did the engine out on my car prior to my ownership did just this and it resulted in the bracket being cracked and needed replacing when I did my major.

Thanks. Your comments sent me back to compare the bolts. I had the right bolts but one was missing the washer. Argh! All fixed now.
