Why is it required to find TCD when replacing TBs? If the car is running perfectly AND if reference marks are painted on the pulleys and block, it seems and long as nothing moves (clipping pulleys, placed in 5th gear and handbrake on) when installing the new belts, all will be ok. If anything does move, the reference marks say where to rotate to correct.

And if it is not at TDC and something slips it will be your worst nightmare to correct.

There are very valid reasons somethings have always been done a particular way.

By the way. At TDC there are factory marks on everything. All the paint makes some prior fool made, who knows if they are correct or not. The first thing I do is remove all the marks Ferrari did not make.

Well if you were going to put paint marks on the pulleys why wouldn't you do it at TDC? I don't get it. If you can't figure out how to set it at TDC maybe you shouldn't be replacing the belts and I don't mean that as disrespectful, I just mean really, you should at least figure out how the whole thing works. It's not rocket science.

You're right. It's not rocket science. But you gotta start somewhere. And that's usually by asking questions. And I certainly appreciate the insight given by fellow owners and mechanics on this and others sites; even from the high and mighty ones.

I think if you look into it a little deeper you won't be as intimidated by it. Using the factory TDC marks protects you from a lot of potential gotcha's

Another thing I did not mention. Years ago a mechanic working for me was reassembling something, I do not recall the details. But I questioned why he was doing it the way he was. His response was he was just putting it back together the way he found it. I told him that was not our job. Our job was to put it together correctly and if we are just going to put it together the way we found it, why take it apart to start with.

You have no idea at this point if it is correct or not.

I much appreciate all of the advice and sharing horror story experiences. My original question should have been rephrased as, "What is the importance of finding TDC when changing timing belts?" I now know why, as it's the baseline reference to start from if things go sideways. Oh, and finding TDC was a piece of cake and thankfully my engine is spot on. Thanks again
