360 Timing check

    In theory, that is true. In practice, it is not. You will find that there is no way for you to replicate the tight tension of the old belts after you have removed the old belts and put on a new one. The tension on the belts affect how many degrees you can turn the crank before the belts are tight enough to start turning the cams.

    Finding true TDC (and then mark it once and for all at the flywheel) gives you a way to get back to a known place.

    Reading these two message portions, it makes me wonder if there was a bad or dirty connection on one of the sensors that was causing the CEL and if the connection problem was fixed when the sensors were swapped side to side? It would be nice if it was that simple.

    Well, I spilled a lot of coolant over the engine, maybe half a gallon or so, it may be that I need to clean the contacts with cleaner. I’m going to try that next. But no CEL still after the swap.

    Looks like the TDC marks on the cams (rear side of engine). Presumably engraved after a wine-heavy lunch. :D

    I was referring to an earlier picture way above. As for the last picture, I have no idea what we are looking at.

    Was this off by one tooth when you did the belt swap and fixed it by turning the offending cam one extra tooth? Or you corrected by degreeing the cam?

    OK, now I see what we are looking at. The first picture actually shows that the cam is out of time by a lot.

    Just adjusted the cam and refitted the belt. Test drove and no CEL, everything checks for now.

    Minor? A "Minor" offset of that nature could potentially cause a hell of a lot more damage than just a CEL.

    Looks to me like a reflection on the first pic, and he just had it way off kilter. I only see the one timing mark.

    Yellow line is reference machined valley mark on end cap. Blue is a scribed mark is on the cam.
