I'm doing the timing right now and reading through a bit of the forum ... I bumped into this DIY thread from some years ago, captured below. The text indicates that you need to find TDC "on both banks" separately? Once you finish with the first 1-4 bank you need to proceed to get TDC from the 5-8 bank as well? Using cylinder #8? Is this a mistake or am I missing something fundamental here? Image Unavailable, Please Login
It's not a mistake, but it is also not necessary. There is only one crank shaft and it is manufactured to very tight tolerance. I would trust that TDC on Cyl1 will also imply that TDC on Cyl8 is 90 degrees away on the degree wheel. But, if you are OCD, then have at it.
I agree 110%. In fact I like to determine TDC by lining up the 5-8 bank equally, meaning get the #7 and #8 to both be at equal position, thus giving you TDC. I can do it by eye with sub degree accuracy.
