    What's the etiquette here?

Car is being delivered from east coast to west coast, multiple car carrier (enclosed). Small company (possibly even owner/operated), not an Intercity or Horseless Carriage.

I usually give $100 for a delivery that's on time, and the car in perfect condition.... After I have thoroughly inspected it first.

$50's fine according to a GM at an F dealership I spoke with a while back.

it's funny you should ask. i have not tipped the drivers on the two deliveries i have had. both times i got immediately in the car and took off. when i got back later they were gone. guess i was too exited to think about it. oops

I hadn't even thought of tipping an auto delivery driver before, although I do tip tow truck drivers that take care of my car. It's paid off apparently, there was a couple incidents that resulted in my car going on tow trucks twice in three weeks. First time I tipped him $20 since he took his time and knew exactly how to secure my car without causing damage. Couple weeks later the problem from the previous call apparently wasn't fixed properly and car died again. Called for the two and was told it would be an hour and a half to two hours, same guy from previous call showed up within 20 minutes. Guess tipping works!

I asked my dealer what the etiquette was and he said $40 was average.

call me what you like, but why do we tip people for doing thier job? i'd love to get tip'ed for showing up or filing a proposal on time. some jobs i can gather don't pay well enough on salary so it's expected for the customer to tip. but why? why pay so meanial? this is one thing i just don't get, don't worry i still tip. but i've always wondered.

It gives people an incentive to do a good job. It gives them a little control over how much they make depending on their performance. "If I do a mediocre job I make x amount, if I do a really good job I might make a little more."

I get tipped for showing up or filing a proposal on time. It's called a bonus.

What about a large company like Intercity or Horseless Carriage? Same recommendations?

I tipped the Intercity driver $40. He refused to take it, so I put it in his cab.
