I'm having a car shipped from KY to CA and don't if (and how much) I should tip the driver. Assuming the car is in the same condition as it was before loading onto the truck, or course. What have you guys done?

I'm not quite as generous as William ;) But, I always give the driver a few bucks --- about 40 or so --- and, tell him to stop for a decent dinner on the way home.

$40 or so. They'll appreciate the tip especially if they've delivered as promised or that's in their control.

I've only used private carriers who own their own truck. It never occured to me that a tip would be in order. Other than waitresses and barbers the only other person that gets a tip from me is the Roto Rooter man, after he cleans up.

There's actually a really good thread on this if you'll do a search. If I have a second I'll post a link here.

I'm going to sound cheap here, but no. I had my car shipped from San Diego to Boston and didn't tip the driver. Tipping waitresses, barbers, etc. is fine by me (and I tip well). But, the amount of people who expect tips these days seems to be getting out of control. The guy that delivered my car did a fine job. He even delivered it the day and time he said he would. But, he was getting paid to drive across the country and I paid $1700 for him to do it. I EXPECTED my car to be there when they told me it would. If he somehow went above and beyond what I expected, then I would have been more inclined to tip him. Say, maybe if he dropped of TWO Ferraris. That would have gotten a tip.

$100, I've never seen a guy so careful in how he moved around the car in the trailer and backed it up; I don't think it was for show, he just appeared genuinely respectful of the car and he was a nice guy too :)

When I bought my Viper I was young and ignorant and I didnt tip the transport driver as I never knew anyone who had ever had a car delivered to them.

I still feel bad about it.

My Ferrari was 2 days late and what was really a bummer was they were absolutely stunning days 75 degree's, clear skys.. ..

He delivered it, started raining, no tip..

He said, sorry my company had me go from Dallas to Houston to pick up another car on the way and that is the reason he said he was late...

I didn't tip my driver, but then, I DID pour a good gallon of gas into the tank & carbs of some POS pushbutton transmission Dodge that he had to offload on a cold snowy night to get my car off the transporter. Maybe the half-hour I spent helping him get that pig back on the truck was worth more to him than a tip - he seemed plenty happy to be on his way again!

Interesting timing of this thread.... I just had a car delivered to me today from Lamborghini of Chicago, and yes, I did tip the driver :) Very nice guy, called when he left Chicago, called when he was 15 miles from my house, and arrived within 45 minutes of the time he predicted ( not bad for a 5 1/2 hour trip! ) when he set out this morning ---- that certainly deserves a tip in my book.

I don't believe in tipping all service people for doing what they are already getting paid to do....but, how can you not feel motivated to tip the guy who is delivering your "baby" back to you :)

However, I don't believe in tipping the Doctor who delivers my "kids" -- LOL

I tipped when mine arrived....there was actually two of them so it cost me double, but I was so happy I didn't care.

Tipping the guy pays you back. On a recent incident I tipped the guy(owner) and he was appreciative. I thought I had maybe left some prescription sunglasses behind and called him later. I found them and called him back and he had stopped the rig to look around. I doubt that would have happened if no tip. When you get the car you've hoped for it just makes sense to take care of those that made it happen. :)

I tipped my transport driver $100 - just seemed the right thing to do.

I would have tipped the driver, but he delivered the car two weeks after it was initially promised. No tip.

I always tip the driver. Usually about $100 if the trip was over 1000 miles. If under 1000 miles I might tip less.
