There is an interesting article about the Cunningham / Momo Tipo 151 that was in the fiery crash at the 1963 Daytona Continental. It provides interesting information and pictures.

The story tells about the driver, Marvin Panch, and the men that waded into the flames to rescue him from the overturned car. There is even a copy of one of the pages from the accident report showing the locations and actions of the rescuers.

This article is in the April 2013 issue of "Vintage Racecar".

    Interesting.
I have a photo of Marvin Panch posing next to the car just prior to his crash.

Can you scan and post the feature here?

Walter; this seems to add credibility to my story of seeing this car some years later (1966?) in northern California, at that time with a 'mostly' fiberglass body, definitely with a 427 Ford.....have to see if the article makes any mention of the ownership trail....

    Hi Walter

I am reluctant to put the article on the internet without permission from the magazine. I will try to get you a copy of the magazine. I get mine via subscription. The bookstore that regularly carried this title is no longer in business. I will work something out, even if it comes to sending you my copy.

If you are interested in this approach, please PM me a mailing address.

    Aloha

I had previously seen pictures of it upside down, which made it hard to get the
driver out because the doors went into the roof a bit, so weight of car was on the door tops. The rescuer won a battle for getting the driver out of a burning car.
I think this was car 151.004, later thrown into a landfill by Chuck Jones. My question is, which car 151.004 or 152.006 was the one that went to the Oakland Roadster show where it won "Crowd favorite" or some such title, who owned it then?

Could this be a clue about the ownership chain?

I was reading an obituary for Dean Jeffries. Dean Jeffries was one of the early southern California hot rod and custom builders. He rented shop space from George Barris at one time and worked with the father of Kenneth Howard, better known as Von Dutch.

A quote from the article: "His first major success was in the 1964 Grand National Roadster Show with his asymmetrically styled Mantaray, which featured a Maserati Grand Prix chassis and a Cobra engine."

    Larry,
you are mentioning the Mantaray-car. That car was based on a prewar Maserati GP-CHassis. Most likely it was a 6CM frame. Nothing to do with the 151-story...

    Hi Walter

Thank you for that information, setting me straight.

Coincidentally, I got a call from a friend in L.A. this afternoon. He has done some work for the Peterson Museum and said that the Mantaray is in the basement storage area of the Peterson.

    Aloha

Then please ask him to look for the VIN on the left or right rear part of the frame. This would solve a BIG mystery!
