Was this the same 3L V12 as that which was used in the 250f in the late 50s? Or was it and all new design?

It was more or less the same design. Some V12 units were used in the 250F with 2.5 cc capacity. It is most likely, that some motors -among them engine #3503!!- were increased to 3.5 liter and fitted into the T63/64.
Maserati was not in the financial position to develop a complete new design.

    Ciao!

Much like Ferrari continued developed the 315/335 motors from 1957 well into the mid 1960's(330P2) , so did Maserati with its V12 1957 motors.
The Tipo 64's motor is closer to the Maserati V12's installed in Cooper
F1 chassis, without injection. Still the overall design is very similar to the
    1957 2489cc and 3495cc F1/sporstcar versions.

engine #3503 survived and was sold in an auction in the late 90ies. It was bought by Klaus Werner who had it in his 250F #2531 that originally was a V12-car with Behra. Its said that this engine was sold by Werner to a collector who seem to own the 350S #3503 so that engine & chassis of that car are now matching. I didn`t saw #3503 so far.

Then another V12-engine survived with the Panini-Collection. This motor was completly restored by my friend Steve Hart in the UK and is in Matteo Panini`s 250F.

Another V12-unit came via the Orsi-Family in the early 80ies (?) to a replica maker from Ferrara/Italy. He created his own 350S-replica but fitted with the original motor. This car was scrapped by the Italian Police 3 years ....INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL V12-MOTOR!!!

Who initiated this insane action? Everybody in Italy knows that.....................!

    Ciao!
    Walter
