Just curious, what's the consensus on tipping the housecleaners in hotels? A discussion came up at work, and everyone seems to have a different standpoint on when (each day vs. at end of stay) or even whether to tip for having your room cleaned.

I've never tipped a hotel cleaner. What the heck am I paying for when I drop the money for the room?

Nope. It's considered offensive. Makes my expense reports easier...

I never Tip for hotel housecleaning.

I however, Tap regularly for regular household cooking and cleaning.

The house is never clean and we always eat out. Needless to say, she wants her money back.

should the cleaners be treated similarly to a waitstaff and receive gratuity for their service?.. or are they just doing a job (like the rest of the working world)?

ace, that adds a whole new meaning to "tip for tap"

i used to work for a big hotel chain.(in HS and college) .. Please tip them.

Best is if you tip them while you are still staying there. It could make a big difference in your stay.

Proper tipping protocol calls for tipping a housekeeper/chamber maid as follows:
"$5 a night minimum. More if long stays (over a week) Consider $7 to $9 a night."

Cleaners do get paid in hotels and large establishments. In smaller establishments their pay may use a little help.

However, tip no more than the amount you would tip yourself if you were doing the same job. I have friends who tip 5$ or even 10$ to housekeepers who take 10 minutes to clean a room, when i know they (my friends) make about 30$ an hour working a desk job. Thats crazy. Give me an apron anytime.

Tip for tap, funny you mention that. My current GF used to be a waitress back when we were at college. Tipping jokes annoy the crap outta her. I'll use that line on her later tonight, see what she says. I might not get tap!

If I'm on vacation and have been in a room for a while, I'll leave a tip, anywhere from $3-$5/day. If I'm on business, arrive in the evening and leave the next morning, I won't.

I worked at a hotel for many years while I was a student.

Maids get paid a non-tipping wage (unlike waiters), so they are not relying on your tip for their income. Tips are a bonus for them.

I was never good at economics, but 9$/night?

Say a cleaner takes 15 minutes to clean a room. They work a 10 hour shift, thats 40 rooms a day, EASY.

    40 x 9 = 360$ per day.

    360$ x 5 days = 1800$ / week. JUST TIPS cash in hand.

Again, hand me an apron someone..

Hey, I don't make the protocol, I just quote it. Personally, I leave $3-$5/day, depending on how badly I've trashed the room.

I'd stay at a different hotel.

everbody is trying to make ends meet and I figure if I have more economic advantage than someone working "for" me, why not share. I know all housekeepers really appreciate tips and they work hard.

It was in this booklet: "Guide to Tipping" that I found in the glove compartment of this Mondial I bought. Looked brand new like it had never been opened. ;)

My wife has a very simple explaination for tipping housekeeping. When you leave your room, you also leave your toothbrush there. If you are mean to the maid, imagine the places that your toothbrush might go while you are out. We always treat the maid with respect and tip them. I never worry about where my toothbrush is.

One can be generous & cheap at the same time.

If stay is extended, tip 'em equivalent of a US dollar each day so they have something to look forward to, just as you do. Incentive to treat you a little more special is raised & they're not getting rich doing this.

In the off chance you bump into your "maid," let's say her name tag says Sally - ask Sally if she's got kids - she'll probably tell you how many.

At the end of an extended stay, or an overnighter, give her the equivalent of whatever coin you like (say a quarter) for each kid (with a note - "for your kids, Sally" & double up on the daily tip for her.

    On the cheap:
    "Cost"
    0 kids
    1 night - $2
    2 nights - $3 - 1, 2
    3 nights - $4 - 1, 1, 2
    etc.

    1 kid
    1 night - $2.25
    2 nights - $3.25 - 1, 2.25
    3 nights - $4.25 - 1, 1, 2.25
    etc.

    2 kids
    1 night - $2.50
    2 nights - $3.50 - 1, 2.50
    3 nights - $4.50 - 1, 1, 2.50
    etc.

It won't kill ya & you can probably do better than that, aye?

I look at this issue as if I were a cleaner.
I normally tip $2-3 for 1st night, and if it was done well, next day I'll put $5 & little memo saying "thanks" or "I need such & such". I don't have to call concierge for addtional items I need when I need them.
If I stayed at a hotel w/ my family (6 of us), we usually need 2 rooms, and I start w/ $3 per room, and increase to $5, 8, then 10, depending on how long the stay. (never stayed at the same hotel fore more than 3 nights so far)

Surprising thing is many don't take tips if it was over $5 though. (that's why I started to put a memo w/ tip)

I usually tip $5 a night and leave it on the bed in the morning so the see it. On some occasions if I'm at a nice hotel and I'm staying a week or so, I'll give the lady $20 in advance and it always comes in handy because any time I need something such as extra towels, etc, everything is delivered promptly and courteously. I just like people to know that I appreciate it.
