Found it interesting on a dog forum of mostly women, what they find to be appropriate tipping. These women are tipping owners of businesses. According to them tipping the owner of a hair salon or a nail place is not only good, it shows they appreciate their service.

Anyway, I said in my opinion its insulting to tip the owner of a business. On a $60 hair cut, you tip $15. If the owner needed that $15, then they should charge $75. If an owner does a good job, I'll tell them with words. If they provide lousy service I won't be back.

I only tip for services that are usually tipped. I don't however tip the owner of a business. Case in point. I know of a small hotel and cabin deal on one of the finger lakes in NY. I know its the owner who takes you to your room and helps with the bags. So no tip. If an employee does it, $10. Same with the espresso place I go to. The owner is sometimes the Barista, no tip, one of her employee's its $1. I don't tip for haircuts, that's right the barber is the shop owner.

These women think I'm totally wrong. Only the men agree and one female. Women just waste money.

I own a business and I have had clients try to tip me. I politely tell them how nice a thought that is, but it's really not necessary. I then tell them if they would really like to show their gratitude for the service we provide they should take care of my employees upon delivery and setup. I just don't think it's right for me to accept it.

I did say most owners should politely turn it down. In away its a little insulting to tip the owner, unless its for the employee's. These women do it all the time, dog groomers, nail and hair salons, etc. I've bought cases of beer for my mechanic. But I don't tip him with money.

If the owner is physically providing the service, I see nothing wrong with tipping them. Full disclosure, I generally overtip.

My barber owns the shop and I do not tip them. He however turns down tips. Now these women are saying they tip because it helps cover the credit/debit processing fees. To that I said its a cost of business and up to the business owner to price to cover business costs.
