    Guys,

The leather on my steering wheel cover (center of wheel) has bubbled a bit. I would like to either re-glue it or get it recovered if necessary.

It appears that the cover is held on from the back by two recessed bolts. I presume these are probably allen head cap bolts Any confirmations of that (my car is on a lift right now so hard for me to check myself!)?

But most importantly, I want to find out if there are any precautionary steps I should be aware of to avoid having an airbag blow up in my face! As usual, I am all ears if the smart guys have any wisdom to share. Best regards to all.

Most likely tamper proof allen head bolts. You want to disconnect the battery before messing with the airbag

    Rob,

someone on this forum has suggested injecting a tiny amount of glue in the bubbles with a syringe, then pressing down on the bubbles themselves to get the air out.
You might try this before taking the steering wheel apart.

I have removed the center part for the same reason. No precaution is neccesary, except perhaps switching the battery off. The bolts are not secured in any way, they just screw out.

Recovering or even glueing it is not straightforward, since at least I did not figure out how to remove the center embleme (without distroying it). One can lift off the leather completely from the face, except at the embleme, and then apply glue over the whole exposed face. That works fine.

In any case, take care that the electrical connectors do not contact anything.

Fitting is just the reverse. I did not disconnect the battery and plugging in of the contacts was without problems, just as removal. I would, however, not recommend others to let the battery connected. In any case, keep your head out of the way, work sideways.

    Cheers, Bernhard

P.S.: Injecting glue with a syringe might work as well, but then take care to use littly amounts only and a glue with low viscosity. Otherwise you will risk that a bump is created by glue not being distributed homogeneously over the inner face of the bubble. You will never be able to press such a glue clot flat as soon as it has started to bind. For the same reason, if you have lifted the whole leather off, take care to apply the glue as a very thin film only and without any clots or the like.

OK :D, these tools are included in any better bit kit, I suppose (they are at least in mine).
