    hey all,

someone might of made a thread on this . . . can someone give me some tips on swapping the long heater hose that runs to the front of the car thru the body? . . . seems I recall someone mentioning attaching the new piece of hose to the old one with all thread or something and pulling it thru . .. still looks like you gotta pull the master cylinder to get to the tee in the front though?

    thanks,

    Sean

I would suggest using a silicon hose as a replacement.

Wire the new hose to the old one to form a butt connection and lubricate the hell out of the hose. One person pulling and one person guiding/pushing. Did someone say Astroglide? If I remember correctly, there were 2 hoses and we did both at the same time.

thanks for the tips . .. when I was showing someone where that hose went he said "you're gonna have to replace that again in 27 years? .. what a PITA" . . . some people :)

might do silicone as Russ suggested and extend that time to 50+ years :)

is Astroglide like electrical pulling lube? . . . got a bunch of that so I'll coat the hose in that too.

    cheers

When we did the hoses on my car (the larger one is the heater hose, the smaller one is the vacuum hose for the brakes), I had the gas tank out. With the tank in place, it is almost impossible to get as the hoses, as they make a turn around the frame members right behind the gas tank. IIRC, when we did it, we fed the hose from the front towards the back, as it was easier to pull it that way. As Paul said, we wired them together (put a wooden dowel in the hose to butt the ends together, then wired and duct taped them), then sprayed a lot of silicone on them as they went through. We did both hoses, but think we pulled them through one at a time, but guess you could do them together.

As far as the connections up front, they were a little bit if a PITA, but not too bad. You have to fish around to get them out and around, but nothing that technical about it.

thanks for the link . . .of course my gas tanks are topped off all the way right now . . . looks like I'll cut and paste the hose one more time 'til I have another reason to mess with the gas tank on that side.

    cheers

1982 308 GTSi. Right in the middle of this project right now. Did NOT remove tank. Did go to the corner of the door and remove a bit of upholstery. (Gently) lift the large triangular aluminum piece running up beside the seat belt. This exposes a small panel with a handful of pop rivets. Drill them out and you see the tubes come from under, make a brief rise, then dive back into an oval cutout that runs along the door sill. I fed from the read and pushed downward with a 1' stick to inch the hose along and made a large loop inside the car. Once I had about 6' of tubing, I pulled this from the front wheel well until the tubing was routed.

I noted lots of wear on the heater hose where it rubbed the frame at the oval hole. It was through the nylon reinforcement and just about ready to break through. This was reinforced with another piece of tubing cut and glued in place. Did each hose individually. Did this all by myself. Too about an hour to do each. All the other heating hose after the control valves is another story. Removed the master cylinder and booster to get access to all the other connections, and to remove a mouse nest. Seems to be a popular spot...

Now I will inspect the booster while it is out. Maybe rebuild the master cylinder too if the mood strikes. It is already on the bench...

I have a tip, have someone else do this for you. I had mine changed out a few years ago while the engine and tanks were both out.
