I was interested in everyone's opinions on tires for 355 rims. I am mounting these rims on my 348. Right now, the have Goodyear Fiorano's with maybe 1/8 inch tread left.

I don't want any larger tire than stock, but it seems like the 265/40/18 (rear tires) are quite hard to find. Will 255's work? I really don't want to go any wider for fear of grazing my fenders.

    Thoughts?

Another tire question...is it absolutely necessary to get "Z" rated tires? How about W or Y? What's the difference?

Y tires are rated for 189 MPH, whereas Z tires are rated for "in excess of 155 MPH". So what to get depends on your driving conditions.

IMO, 255's will work. Just be careful, as you will have less rear grip on a car that needs a lot.

Anyone got P-Zero Corsas on the 355? Are they standard width or slightly wider?

I think the Corsa tire comes in a match for the front but not the back????? Does anybody know for sure?

I use Pirelli Corsas and they are excellent.

    Std: 225/40/18 F and 265/40/18 R
    Corsas: 235/40/18 F and 265/35/18 R

No problems, excellent for road and track.
However, because they are soft, expect only 4000-6000 miles.
Although I have no problems in the wet, you need to be careful of standing water.

Why not just use the factory-recommended tires? --That is, the same tires that came with the car?

348SStb...I've heard the P-zero's are excellent, but they don't last long and other tires of equal quality can offer substantially longer life and cost a bit less. Unfortunately, the extent of my knowledge doesn't span to include which other tires those are :(

    Good thread topic....will be following!

Had you ever tried the P-Zero semi slicks from a few years ago? I used to have those but they're not made anymore. They were phenominal.

I have not tried the P-Zero semi slicks.
However, I am about to try Hoosiers on my next track day on 5th Feb. They are as close as you can go to a slick tyre.
I have also tried Michelin Pilot Sport Cups on my 355, but I did not like them as much as the Corsas. I found the grip level higher, but the transition from gripping to giving up was very fine and came without much warning.
Other people will no doubt have differing opinions!

Am not a fan of std P-Zeros. They're bad news in the wet and this is the mode that I prefer to cater for - in the UK rain is a fact of life, and aquaplaning at speed is not good for the underwear.

I switched to Bridgestone S01s, but there wasn't really a marked improvement with these at the expense of a bit more road noise.

With wide tyres in a heavy car, I could be looking for the impossible. But I think I'll be trying Contintal tyres. It's been suggested that these may be better.

I'm also a fan of Yokohama, but I use these on my other car. The one thing this car has taught me is how sensitive a car can be to tyres, and how much difference it can make to the feel of the car.

Sadly, experimenting with 355 tyres is an expensive business - one tyre costs me as much as 4 on the other car!

In the UK, in '99, I believe there were 3 "factory approved" tyres - std. P-Zeros, S01s and Goodyear Fioranos (the latter being the run flat jobs that cost rather a lot of money each and so I excluded them on the grounds of potential bankruptcy!!).

I put Bridgestone S02's on my 348. I am running 235/40-18 fronts and 295/35-18 rears. I did have to roll the front inner fender lips but the rears are fine. I would stick with the 225s on the front but as you can see you've got some room on the rears.

Here's an idea although I have had the rear ride height adjusted a bit since these photos.

    Cheers

my 348 has 18x8 front with 225 and 19x10 rear with 295. have no problems with fit. drive street and track. wider rear almost totally eliminates oversteer issues. also very happy with kumho mx tires

OK, dumb question: If you have these such wide tires, do you not get tons of rocks thrown up on your car from the tread? Seems like if the tire is protruding out from the well, your car would have chips all over it!

    AHG,

Thank you for the detailed info on height etc...everything you have to say is very helpful except for the part about "not noticable" re - wheel opening...

It would seem that an inch dif would show / be noticed in the apperance...I don't want to look like a low rider (don't know if they have those in Aus) on these tires, although I like everything else you have said about them....

    Do you have any pics????????????????

    Thanks for your reply

ps do they come in a wider profile for the rear...285 / 295????? (would it fit?) that would give me back the hight I'm stressing over...

    Hi sirbob,

You can buy Corsas in 285 and 295 widths but only with a 30 profile.
They do fit the 10" rear rims, but the gearing is now -6.1% and -5.2% respectively, compared to -4.0% for the 265/35-18 tyres.

Pic of my 355 with 265/35-18 tyres attatched.

I actually want to go with a slightly SMALLER (narrower) tire on the rear than OEM. I know this flies in the face of what everyone prefers here, but I like the handling of the 255/40/18 better than the 265. Question is...will the 255 work OK on the 10 inch rim? My measurements tell me "yes", but what does everyone else think?
