Any thoughts on what type tires to get for a 1991 348. Not a Pirelli fan so should I still with the recommended Bridgestones? Does it even matter as long as I get ZR rated?

Yes it matters - not all Z-rated tires are equal.

My fav is the BFG KD. Best street tire hands-down (IMO), I've ever put to the pavement. You can also buy them from Wal-Mart (special order in store) for less than Tire Rack. Having Wal-Mart mount/balance them is up to you, however my local store has the same equip as the main shop most of the SCCA guys use for tires/alignment, with wheel protection features. They did fine by me, plus the mount/balance/road hazard is less than $10 a tire.

    My 2 TP.

I'll tell you what to avoid... Sumitomo ECSTA ASX. They are fine for regular street driving. They blow for anything more spirited. Rock hard, take forever to warm up, and have no adhesion. The rain grip is quite good, and unfortunately, I can report they WORK WELL in the snow.

    Other than that, skip 'em.

Be sure to replace only in sets of four. Do NOT replace only two tires at a time on a 348 (see archives for bad experiences with doing only two).

Hey Jeff, what bad experinces did people have only doin 2 at a time?? The inner edges on the rear of mine are nearly worn,so ill get new tyres soon. But the front are still like new. Why should i replace all four?? What problems did the other guys mention about only doin two?? Im very curious? :)

Pap, I'm sorry I don't have time right now to post links to the old threads, I'm right in the middle of a huge stack of paperwork for a meeting with my accountant tomorrow.

The short version: there has been more than one person here (including me) who reported that their 348 became wildly unstable after installing just new rear tires, even with 50% plus remaining on the old front tires. Alignment was fine, pressures were fine, same tread pattern, same speed rating, same brand of tire (Bridgestones in my case), installed on the correct corner with the directional tread set up properly, but weaving all over the road!

Installed a set of four new ones, with no other changes, and it went back to normal. Hated to waste the good tread on the old front tires, but the car was undriveable!

    I second the Yokohama brand.

They have serveral versions, depending on your budget.

The Neova is outstanding. Best street tire out there. Somewhat limited sizes. Neova = top performance.

The ES100 is unbeatable price wise. I personally tried them with a Ferrari fitment & have only good things to say about how they wear, and perform. Not to mention that they are really priced well. ES100 = value.

From the factory, the front rims are 17"/7.5" with Bridgestone RE71 215/50/ZR 17. The rears are 17"/9" with Bridgestone RE 71 255/45/ZR17.

In ref to those inner edges being worn, you might consider adjusting the rear camber. If you're not tracking the car there's really no reason in having alot of negative camber.. That rubber may last twice as long!

Yeah, you are right,i dont race it. The rest of the tyre is like new. Lol. My brother had a Holden Statesman, which was so low,you couldnt put your fist under the sills of the car.Very very low ;) He had the same trouble with the independent rear end. He just rotated the tyres on the rim when they wore on the inner edge to get more life out of them. So.............We have a mate that owns a local tyre shop here,so i can get tyres dirt cheap,so im not totally fussed about the camber and to get more life out of the tyres, ill rotate them on the rim. I know its not the best thing to do,but i just cruise the car around so im not too worried about it at all. :)

Goodyear Eagle F1. Great tire, great reviews on TireRack. Sticky in the summer and good in the rain in the winter, non-directional tread so they don't follow every ridge in the road. They wear well and are speed rated for your car - you'll love 'em.

Its low but still not low enough. I guess the stuff in the boot doesn't help the tyre wear either LOL

The one set I ran through chunked pretty significantly, along the edge, after a weekend at the track. Other than that, they were a great street tire.
