    Interesting discussion...

My Indy 4.7 runs on original wheels...

14 inch I believe. And I paid deerly for XWX's. Think I put on 215s. Great tyres but that ride hight is crazy low. What were they thinking.

Any 14 tyres with even higher hight?

Or must I buy Ghibly wheels? Where to find?

    Regards,

I drove a friends Indy for several days a couple of years ago and he had put 15" wires on it. That car was still low and very difficult to get on/off a service lift. So I can't imagine the 14" rims!

But I thought the later ones were all 15" so why not go that route and still look factory "correct" if somewhat different?

Got 15" wires on mine but will change to the Ghibli/Khamsin 15" wheels soon.
Wires on the Indy just dont look right. It is still super low and difficult to lift.
Need to drive on wood panels first before the arms fit underneath.

Thanks. Dont you think it would look better with the original ghibli 15" wheels?
Well, original are the 14" wheels but they are too small. Somehow people like the wires but i dont. On the Mexico the Borranis look better but not on the Indy.

Am also thinking about getting the vredestein 215/70. so far i have heard good things. Was a little surprised to only read negative feedback here. Anyone else with experience?

i think you are right. the wires (especially bolt ons) just don't look right. i never understood the 'jacked up' rear on the indy's.the design is tail happy to start with and high like this looks a bit boy racer and wrong.can it be brought down?
personally i'd go for xwx 225's.
if you had a, say, 365 gtc that is what you'd put on without any second thoughts, right?

Actually i dont think the indy looks high in the back. Might be a strange perspective in the pic. The exhaust is very low and touches the ground on bumpy roads, so would be difficult to change. Think i'll opt for 215/70. Currently i have 215/65 Avons installed but think they look too small

Dirk, I run Michelin XWX 215\70 VR15 on my 73 Indy4900, on the Campagnolo Starburs wheels. It looks just right IMHO. Reason for why I selected the 215 was because the original spare wheel came with the car, and it had XWX 215\70 VR 15 The Indy manual say it's supposed to have 205 width, but I believe the wheels could been delivered with Michelin XWX 215\70 VR 15 from the factory for the LHM Indy4900's.

    Kind regards

    Kim

I've not had the Vredestein but my tire shop , a very good one, who works with Pirelli on the racing series here when they're the tire supplier for a series also sells these and has good things to say about them.

Consider also that this forum is a very small group so you do have to take everything with a bit of salt sometimes. I think Avon might have some tires to consider as well. I'm an unabashed non fan of the XWX tire but they good at high speed in a straight line. They have a very stiff sidewall and tire shops who know what they're doing charge extra for installing them because of it.

Where to find? Standard Borrani version or Starburs (but those are just for 4.9 admittedly).

Need then set of 4 and any center cap if Starburs.

    Ideas where to find?

Hein brand in germany reproduced the starburs campagnolo for 500€ a piece.
You can get the center caps at MIE
If you prefer Borranis then i would guess you can still get them at Borrani or their scandinavian distributor.

So you would prefer the. Michelin XWX? A friend said that they make the car less stable in turns and it doesnt feel so direct with them on. He has a set on his Indy

    Hi Team

I'm hoping you might be able to help me out with some anorak work, I'm wanting to clarify a date that i can't find in my reference books.

I think that the Ghibli was made from 1966 to 1973. Ruote Borrani make a selection of wheels mostly 6.5X15 & 7X15 (and they also do 7.5" but i think that mighty be a bit more "special build").

We know that the Ghibli originally came out on the 205VR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CN72

I'm struggling to find any accurate reference, but i know that some of the later cars came out fitted with 215/70VR15 tyres, But i don't know weather it was Michelin or Pirelli and i don't know what date they changed over. My guess is 1972.

QUESTION NUMBER 1 - What date did Maserati start fitting 215/70VR15 tyres to The Ghibli

I know that the 215/70VR15 Pirelli Cinturato CN12 215/70WR15 PIRELLI CINTURATO ™ CN12 came out in 1971. That one is easy.

Without doubt Michelin were making 70 profile XWX tyres in 1970, tyres like 215/70VR15 Michelin XWX . However thanks to chatting to people on FerrariChat forum, i also know they were making the same tyre in 1968 on the first Daytona, it was the XWX but at the time it was just called an X. I actually believe the XWX tread pattern started earlier than than that, i think the XWX tread design started in 1966, while being called "X" but not with the low 70% profile because it hadn't been invented until 1968. Which raises the next questions:

QUESTION 2 - When the Ghibli did change to 215/70VR15 tyres was it Michelin XWX or Cinturato CN12 (there is a slight possibility it could have been Cinturato CN36, But i don't think so).

QUESTION 3 - Did they at the same time change from 6.5X15 Borrani Wheels to 7" wheels?

On the subject of size 215/65R15 and 205/70VR15 they are completely the wrong size. And you should not fit inner tubes in 65% profile tyres. And wire wheels need inner tubes.

The picture below shows the correct original 205VR15 Cinturato CN72 tyres that the earlier cars left the factory with. it is still being made by Pirelli, we are shipping them all over the world and the quality is excellent. (if you buy them on line the shipping is excellent value, most places it is free, but we can even ship a set of 5 tyres to places like Australia for only £ 150 and when you think how big they are that is pretty good value. or you can buy them from Stuckey Tyres in Aus).

The tyre on the right is a 215/70VR15 XWX, again no doubt an excellent tyre, i would think that currently these are probably the most popular classic Masser tyres. The tyre on the left is a 205/70VR115 XWX, showing that because the side wall height is only 70% of 205mm instead of the 80% that is the 205VR15, the there is 20mm difference in radius (25.4mm - 1"). making the diaameter nearly 2 inches smaller.

When we took this picture there wasn't the CN12 tyres that we now have. (There is also a budget version 215/70VR15 PIRELLI CN12 (Vintage Car use only, no DOT or E Mark) )
