Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you got problems. The only place that still makes them is Coker, a manufacturer of antique and discontinued tires, such as the tires one would need for a Model T Ford. Last time I checked, the price was over $400 PER tire. That particular size TRX tire is different from the relatively common version used on the 308 and it's not very common. Only alternative in my mind was new wheels. I got a set of 348 wheels on eBay for $1000 with tires! They are standard 17" sizes so I can get new tires for a reasonable price. Wheels from the 348, 355 and later Mondials (16" convex) will all fit the M8 wheel/hub offset and bolt pattern. There is also a company making special Mondial wheels that are clones of the later Ferrari Mondial wheels. Do a search. Birdman
220 is the wrong size for a Mondial and not safe to mount. The Mondials are 240, about an inch wider. Birdman
I've also heard of some folks that took their wheels to a wheel shop and had them shaved a little to fit 15" tires.
Not to be argumentative, but I would like to see a link to this. Last time I checked the 240s were not available anywhere, and I checked Avon. I also thought Avon was bought by Cooper a year or two ago and they discontinued the 220s as well, but I could be wrong on that. Do you have a link to an actual listing for the 240s on a manufacturer website? Here's the Coker listing: http://www.coker.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=17428&cat=&page=1 $468 EACH Birdman
I can't find them on the Avon website, but I have sent them an e-mail to confirm if they are available or not. I highly doubt it. Birdman
Your not being argumentative, just confrontational I haven't had to deal with metric tires in 9 years, so it's possible they're NLA. A friend of a friend works for Avon, I'll ask him next time.
I wouldn't call it confrontational. Then again, you are giving advice based on 9 year old experience.... Birdman
Here's something for all Mondial owners to check out regarding those pesky metric wheels: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=96636 Birdman
Dunlop still make them in Germany, just fit five to my Mondial, £135 each.. 230/55/390 SP 2000,rated to over 160 mph, more than enough for my Mondial. Don`t know if you can get them in the US though.
Nuts, I have been using Avon 220 for ages, no problems, yes they are narrower by less than an inch tho'. In fat the Avon tyre is used in racing F3 I think, as a standard tyre.
TireRack carries the TRX in size 220/VR55/390 for about $210 each. I can only find the 415 size TRX on their website now, but I know someone who bought 220/390's from them a few months ago. TireRack does not carry 240's -- need to go to Cokers for that.
I didn't even know there was a 230/55/390. Interesting. I wonder if they can be had stateside? I'll have to check the Dunlop website. I was told that the 220's shouldn't be mounted on a rim for 240's but if you have done it, maybe it's fine! I know the 220's are pretty easy to get. Not cheap, but not ridiculous either. Birdman
Jonathan, I'm sorry you have such a low opinion of TRX's. I had 17" wheels with S-02's on them when I got your car, but at midnight in a driving rainstorm coming back from VIR, I hit a 4"x4" in the road on US 15-501 and bent Ted Waibel's cruddy ACS wheel rims badly enough to lose pressure. I took the jack and BEAT the rim back to a point where it would hold air to get home... After I BOUGHT the Coker TRX's to put on the wheels that you had on the car when you got it, I noticed MUCH easier steering, MUCH, MUCH better ride and generally better chassis "balance" when I pushed it. Now, I understand the TRX's are limited in their capabilities compared to today's rubber, but they DID work well on that car... -Peter (tongue firmly in cheek)
No as far as I know the Dunlop 230 is still manufactured. they are readily available as Fgit says at a reasonable price, its just I prefer the Avon, its a softer compound. Incidentally, I believe that the moulds for the Mich 240's were sold to Bewley ??? motor museum. I also believe that they occassionally have manufacturing runs. But guess the price.
Peter, I don't have a low opinion of the TRX tires per se, just of the price! If I could get them for $200 each I would have replaced the tires and been done with it, but the car needed tires (the TRXs on it when I got the car from you were getting cracked and looked like they had seen a little too much NC sun!) and the going price was $450 PER TIRE plus shipping, so it was looking like $2,000 for tires, and not particularly great ones at that. That's robbery! I like the look of the 348 rims on the Mondial, but lets be honest--348 rims are heavy and generally not that great otherwise. I find the higher steering effort a bit annoying as well and have mentioned it many times here. (Others have suggested that the steering effort is more likely due to the tires on the wheels--Pirelli Pzero--rather than the size/width of the wheels themselves). Philjay50, I would like to see a link to a reference SOMEWHERE about the 230/55/390 Dunlops. I thoroughly searched their website and they list NOTHING for a TRX tire of any size. I'm not saying I don't believe you, I just can't find them. I think this would be a fantastic option to have for people with these rims. Please see if you can post a link to these tires! I wonder if they are only available in Europe? Best, Birdman
No Problem http://ssl.delti.com/mytires/start.html This is a company that supplies them in the UK. I would be happy to check out costs to send a load over to you guys but with freight and Exchange I think the cost would be pretty steep.
You are right! I plugged in the data and got this: Dunlop SP SPORT 2000E 230/55 R390 ZR. £150!!! (About USD$300 each) Not cheap!! I did a Google search on these and there are a lot of references to them in Europe and I couldn't find a single site in the U.S. that listed them, so they are seemingly either not available here or very hard to find! At $300 each plus shipping from the UK, they are not much cheaper than the Cokers. Birdman
I went through the same search just several months ago. Here is the thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=98609&highlight=mondial+tires+wheels It was important to me to keep the exact tire diameter so the speedo and odometer would be accurate. I also opted to go for standard size 16" wheels so I wouldn't run into the availability problem again down the road.
Hi Everyone, I got a PM from Jerry Preisel at Coker today, who saw this thread, and had this to say: Birdman, I am the resident Ferrari guy here at Coker. I have been extended wholesale pricing to all of the F Chat guys for a while now (word just has not gotten around). It's not a huge difference, but I will get you the tires for $416.52 each, they are normally $468.00, plus shipping. Let me know if you are interested. Regards, Jerry So basically, a $50 per tire discount, or $200 off on a set of four just for being an Fchatter. Not bad. Membership has its priviledges. Thanks Jerry, a very nice gesture! Birdman
No problem Birdman, being a fellow enthusiast and future owner I don't mind helping everyone out. When you guys call though be sure to ask for me, no one else here gives that pricing.
