I recently purchased a used Ferrari 296 from a California Ferrari dealership. I live in NY. I paid for the car one month ago, and received the car (after shipped across country), three weeks ago.

Everything went smoothly, very good service, no complaints at all.

The issue is that this dealership does not provide a NY temporary tag and they do a "clean title" by sending the title to CA DMV to get prior owners information "cleaned."

They told me 14-21 business days, which we are just past at this point.

Without the title, I have not yet registered the car in NY or gotten new plates. I do have a letter from the dealership saying they are allowing me to "borrow" the car (or something like that language). I suspect a police officer would not find that letter too convincing.

So bottom line - do I just remain patient and wait it out, or is there something I can do in the meantime? I'm ok waiting for now, but just don't want one month to turn into two, etc....

    Thank you.

They should provide you with a CA temp tag. That should be good for 30-45 days until you get the title and register the car in NY. I went thru the exact same thing with my 296 that I bought from AZ Ferrari dealer. They sent me a clean AZ title and I walked into the DMV in FL and registered it and walked out with a FL title and registration. I kept the AZ temp tag on until everything was completed.

Maybe you have taken the steps of asking the dealer their awareness of DMV communication experiences for people with purchases similar to yours, called the California DMV to learn what their process is, and inquired with New York DMV to see if temporary permit can be issued in New York.

My suspicion is that CA temp tag is for cars driven in California temporarily. I once got one to get car to the state border and outside California thereafter to be licensed in New Jersey after I drove it there.

Maybe the reason not to give a temporary tag is that the dealer in CA would have to charge you a sales tax, ie; the temp tag being issued prompts the state to look for a sales tax from the dealer. Just a thought based on the way CA taxes everything they can get the hands on.

Many years ago, I was on a road run with a bunch of Ferraris and Lambos. One of the cars was a 250 SWB. I seriously doubt the car was registered. The deputy dawg who stopped us was so flustered he didn't notice the 250 SWB didn't have plates. He also didn't notice my Maranello only had photo copied plates. Maybe there is safety on numbers.

This is correct.... If they sell the car without taxes collected, they can't issue any type of tag.... In my dealerships, we can calculate taxes and tag from any state and just collect it in the deal so we can issue a temp if out of state and have out of state tag/title agency complete the metal plates and mail them to the customer... OR we can do zero tax, not issue a plate and leave it up to the customer to register and pay tax in their state upon getting plates themselves which would require them to get title first.

I got a temp tag from the Ferrari dealer I bought my 488 from. I handled the sales tax/plate in my home state.

I carry the BOS and insurance in the car while I wait. In case of getting pulled over, I'll show those two artifacts and inform the LEO that I'm waiting on the new title and thus have not been able to register the car yet.

    That was quick.
I’ve had some titles take 3 months to process this year. Hasn’t stopped me driving but PITA
