Do you have to remove the Crank pulley in order to remove and replace the timing belt on the 348? The clearance between the crank pulley and lower timing belt is miminal and I don't want to damage the new belt.

    Suggestions?

If its any help, on a 355 the Crank pulley does not have to come of. Only pulled forward enough for the belts to slip behind.

I cannot recall having to remove the crank pulley when I did my 348 major 3 years ago. If I recall correctly, as chaa indicated, install with the pulley in place but handle the belt carefully. Need someone with more experience to provide a definitive answer. Sorry for my poor memeory. I will try to look at my project notes this evening if you do not get a better reply.

I have checked again - I can't even get the old belt out because it is so tight - I guess it has to come off. The workshop manual makes no references and haven't found anything in the archives...strange b/c it's going to be a PITA.

Jagbuff, I apologize. I call the part in question a crank damper, my mistake. I did have to remove to replace the belt. Easily done with an air wrench. I also mounted my degree wheel on the crank damper to time the cams. John.
