I'm transferring my insurance from VA to TN.

Instead of one policy for three cars, the agent here wrote three policies, one for each car.
They tell me that's a requirement in TN.

Are they blowing smoke at me?

Or is this a TN State Farm mandate, rather than TN's?

(I had State Farm in VA, and it's taken SF nearly a month to convert that to TN poicies.)

My reply doesn't person to the state of TN...but it does apply to state farm. I'm in Georgia.

State farm writes a separate policy for each vehicle we own. We have 12 separate policies. Furthermore, other insurance is also with them (homeowners etc) so those also get separate policies, naturally.

If it's not a TN government policy, I would not be surprised if it's just simply state farm company policy.

To further complicate matters, we are allowed to pay monthly for all policies rolled into a single payment...EXCEPT the motorcycles. They get their own little separate group of payments.

State farm is a great insurance company...but they do have their quirks (which, I'm sure, is true for all).

Or State Farm policy by state.

I had three cars on one State Farm policy in Virginia, but they say they have to do separate policies in Tennessee.

    ... Aha! ...
I looked for information on "stacking" -- combining "uninsured motorist" coverage.
(E.g. With stacking, if you're injured by an uninsured motorist, stacking could let you combine coverage to increase your limits.)
Per my web search, TN and GA specifically limit stacking to between different policies. Virginia does not have that restriction.
Stacking your UM/UIM auto insurance coverage

Whether the stacking restriction is because of a requirement to have per-car policies, or whether the per-car requirement is because of stacking limits, I can't say.
But that would be why we need separate policies per car, in these states.

Of course, the policies themselves might prohibit stacking.

But at least I found *something* that supports the "separate policy" requirement. ;)

Administration management: the art of making simple things ridiculously complicated. :p

...argh. That should be "pertain", not "person". Thanks a lot, autocorrect...

Also, good information regarding "stacking". I was heretofore unaware of such a term.

The two largest buildings in my town belong to the bank and the insurance company.

    Hmmmmmmm.
