I'm in the process of quitting right now. it sucks. smoked for 10 years about half a pack per day. so far its been 1 week, this is probably my 5th attempt at quitting. never before have I been so completely disgusted and fed up with the habit.

I quit right after Sep 11th of 01. I had smoked for about 8 years at that point, maybe a pack a day.

I did it cold turkey - and it was very easy because I was "ready" to quit.

So, two years go by, I'm a happy non-smoker. Four month ago, on July 4th, I smoked ONE DAMN CIGARETTE. I am now smoking a pack every two days. Not a lot, but damnit! I had quit for two years!

Bummer. Ah well. Maybe I'l try the nicorette gum...

Sorry to hear that Nebs - it's the same as any addiction. Even after the cravings are gone, you can't have "just one", because you're pre-disposed to getting hooked again. Same reason why an alcoholic can't have a single drink even if he's been dry for 10 years.

Good luck in trying again though - the Nicorette really took the edge off for me.

I started smoking maybe 3 years ago when hanging out with my friends at the bar. But I was never addicted. I'd smoke two or three a day, sometimes up to 10 a day and then I wouldn't smoke for a few weeks or a couple of months. And I wasn't "trying to quit", sometimes I'd be too busy to smoke, or I'd not want to be outdoors in the cold, or I just lost the taste of my favorite cigarette.

I decided to actually stop about 3-4 months ago when I got a cough that just would NOT go away. I never knew smoking was related to heart complications, and since I have heart issues anyway, it kinda freaked me out. So I decided just to give it up.

I still enjoy the occasional cigar (once every couple months or so) and I also enjoy the occasional cigarette - like if I'm out with friends... but I smoke maybe 1-2 cigarettes a month now. They still smell good - I never did really like the taste, but I like the smell and they make you feel pretty mellow and relaxed (strange since they are supposed to be a stimulant). But I don't think I ever did get addicted to them, despite probably going through a couple hundred packs over the 2-3 years I smoked.
