Ok, so I have come across an opportunity to possibly buy a new untouched MC12. As it wouldn't be such a great car to drive in this area due to the road conditions and obvious legal issues - I was thinking of buying it as an investment/piece of art. I have a few questions on the investment side -

How are the market conditions for MC12's currently ?

Anyone know what dealers have been asking for MC12's as none of them post prices on their sites?

We know the supply of these cars is low, the question is - what is the demand dictating currently?

Have any been auctioned? If so, did it sell well?

With a sticker of $1.3 million, there are many driveable alternatives(F40 and an F50 with change left over for gas) to be had, but it would make a nice piece of 'artwork' in any residence. Considering what some people pay for a painting - an MC12 would be a steal..

Any help here would be greatly appreciated...

If you are thinking about an MC12 as invesrment/artwork please pm me. I have an MC12 FIA GT race car that is a unique version of the car (Only one in existence.) that is up for sale. This is a serious offer-no foooling around. This car is in Japan and can be had either with or without a huge spares package.

The fact that the car sold for way under its estimated sales range of 1.2-1.4 at a final sale of 1,072,500 is not exactly inspiring confidence...Thanks for the info. Any other examples around?

$799k so it has appreciated. They aren't exactly making any more of them either. As an investment, probably not, though. If you can get it on S&D then you may stand a chance of appreciation beyond $1m. Or buy the FIA car; you'd be real lucky to find an MC12 Corsa.

Yes, but that final sale did not include the buyers premium, which would've made it fall within the 1.2-1.4 range. With that said, there are 3 available in Europe for around 1.2M USD a piece.

I believe the selling price does include the 10% premium. The McLaren F1 had a hammer price of $1,550,000 and they list it as being sold at a price of $1,705,000 in the same list where the $1,072,500 figure appears for the MC12. I wasn't in the room when the MC12 went across the block so I didn't see the actual bidding. Maybe someone else knows for sure, but I think I am right.

As a piece of Art : No. Unless its a rolling piece of art and you ll take it to the track every now and then.

As an investment, well you are an IB, you probably know of better ROI products than a Maserati that has probably reached its peak for the next 10 years.

Hammer was 975k. That puts, in my opinion, fair value for a MC12 between 975-1.0725. It would take a very compelling reason to pay more than 1.07. I feel if a motivated buyer and seller got together to do a deal on a 200mi mc12, it would be 1mm or just a touch over that number.

You could always put removable wheels on a Andy Warhol and hang it in your garage - the best of both - art/investment. ;)

As an investment - Alright, you caught me trying to justify the purchase to myself..Sure there are other investments that would yield a much higher & quicker ROI - but, c'mon, go look at an MC12 in person - then go look at a stock certificate. You tell me which is prettier.

As art- Would have to track it occasionally - and display it the majority of the time. How can you resist the temptation? Would be like getting married to Angelina Jolie - but you are never allowed to touch her.

Well, I know someone who owns an FXX and a MC12 & likes them both the same & would not sell either - however, they should be easy to sell on i.e. waiting lists etc.

If you can afford it & would really like it - buy it!!

Thats the thing, you cant justify it to yourself as an investment. Just buy it as a gift to yourself and a reason to keep doing what you are apparently doing very well ! And take me for a drive :D

I don't know much...but I find it difficult to imagine a situation where buying an MC12 is a bad idea....if anything the experience in itself should be worth whatever pitfalls. There is no reason under earth to justify a purchase like this, whether you want to call it a piece of art or an investment, these machines are bought primarily for passion. But I'm sure you know that.

The MC12 is a stunning car, and if you truely love the car then get one and nevermind its appreciation/depreciation etc.

It's a very unique car and it is lesser known which to me makes it special.

I've said this before - I had more people ask me what the MC12 was than any other car I photographed while in Monterey. It really does look like nothing else out there. I liked the car, however I was never a huge fan of it in photographs. In person it's quite beautiful and has amazing presence.

If you do buy one - you have to drive it. Napolis drives the P4/5 in New York.

Buy it but DRIVE IT DRIVE IT DRIVE IT. Fine automobiles are pieces of four dimensional art, not three dimensional: the fourth dimension is the dynamic one, made of feelings, sound and sheer pleasure. By not driving it you'll be denying yourself the most important expression of this fine piece of automotive art.

PS - I have a friend in CA that owns one, legally registered in the USA. Can put you in contact if you'd like. He drives it!

These can be bought for 600K. One traded at Christies Le Mans auction for less. They are only "show and display" US legal and that conversion ain't cheap and is only good for 1500 miles per year.

P 4/5 already has more milage than that.

    Well said!

IMO the car is one of the ugliest supercars made, ok so personal opinion but I cant find anything, not one thing that makes it attractive other than the fact that there are hardly any of them. Heck i thought the Enzo was ugly til this came along!
