Need your opinions fellas. I'm pretty close to the point where I gotta think about doing a belt job on my 88 Mondial Cab. Normally I'd just run it down to my local Ferrari dealer but in the past year I've meant and worked with a "real" mechanic -- you know the type that are true mechanics not parts changers. His expertise is in Mercedes but when he was younger he worked on Ferraris and Lambos. He recently, in passing, mentioned some work he'd done on a 308. My question for you guys, is it possible to do a timing belt change or are there far to many Ferrari specific tools needed--thus making it a dealer task??? Also, I'm confused, does the Mondial require an "engine out" to do the timing belts??? Some have told me that no it can be done without pulling the engine.

I am certainly no expert, however before buying my Q I did do some research...
Mines an 82, and only needs rear wheel off...hope that helps :)

MY88 means it is not a Mondial T
Only the T needs an engine out
I have done it twice on my Coupe MY87
About 12hs of work the first time
Plenty of info on this site

You need to take the rear wheel off to get access. Have a look in the engine bay on the right hand side of the engine and you will see the 4 cam sprockets. Above these you will see the cam position indicators, which need to line up with the stamped mark on the flat
Should take you about 5 to 6 hours - check the tensioner pulley surface for running tracks, if not smooth then renew.

If you need a valve adjustment then it is either special tool, or remove the cam shafts, Other than that, no special tools, A major includes valve adjustment, cam seal changes, belt and tensioner changes, and some people throw in cam timing. That can be done with engine in, but not in 12 hours.

If you only want to do the belts alone it is very easy job. No special tools at all.

You can do things yourself, provided you bring enough experience. If you don't have it yourself, learn it starting with an old Fiat or BMW or something, a lot cheaper and less frustrating if (when) you break something. Sounds like your mechanic brings it, be sure he stands by his work.
Make sure the lower cam bearings are OK without noise and there are no leaks, changing those out is quite a pain especially with the engine in the car (but change is vital if there is a problem). Proper adjustment of the belt tension is vital too, not only to prevent them from being too loose, but also to ensure the bearings are not damaged from tension being too tight.
Often if you have a combination of problems (oil leakage, hose replacement etc) and you have the room and facilities (safe hoisting!), it is in the end easier and cleaner to just pull the entire drivetrain out. Depends on the scope of work.

Yes, this can be an owner DIY/owner job. Many here have done it multiple times. Its a great way to learn about the car a little and is pretty basic if you are only doing belts. But there is more to a "service" than just doing belts. Tons of info here and other places on the internet. Sorry but you need to know/learn more about your car...google ferrari 308 belt change and spend the afternoon reading.

My car has been down for two years now. Got it apart, got busy. It's coming back together though.

I do much more than belts though.

"T" Models will need the engine dropped out. The transverse engines are easier to do in the car. Just did mine earlier this year. No special tools, just metric wrenches, and sockets. What gets hard is the A/C pump access. You need to work from the top and underneath. Aside from the A/C pump removal - install, the rest is easy. Make sure you note where the shims go for the A/C pump. Those skinny washers are shims to adjust the position of the pump. Also, replace the idlers with new Hill Engineering idlers.

Sounds like me ;) but mine is not moving at all. My engine is out since at least 4 years now. Things will go back together some day.

Check youtube. There are several belt change videos out there. I think even one by our own Bell Bloke.
