How many here flush the engine when changing the oil using an additive like this... http://www.wynns.be/product.aspx?nav=1&g=1&s=25&b=512&p=51265&l=EN
Hi John, This product might be appropriate for a newly purchased garage queen with unknown prior care, perhaps indicated by a really nasty dipstick, or lots of black schmutz visable through the oil filler. In general, if you change the oil yearly, or more often, this kind of "cleanser" shouldn't be necessary. Perhaps the more conservative approach would be to change your oil more often, like 3000 or 4000 miles or annually. Wynns is a major player in the additives business, but i really question the need or efficacy of this type of stuff. And, it is hard to figure what the downside might be without reading the contents and directions. Often, less is more. hth, chris
I don't use additives in the F car or other cars. I learned when I was younger, when I used "Heet" in the gas tank, I was changing out a fuel pump. One bottle of Heet and one fuel pump. A few years later I used one of the "solvert" light oils to remove built up sludge in a crank case and yep, you guessed it, I was replacing the rubber gaskets. Now, I won't use them. Change the fluids on the required schedule and I don't see a need unless you got a clunker that hasn't had the oil changed in 50,000 miles. But then that clunker probably has other issues.
Thanks guys. My 308 has had regular oil changes all its life to the best of my knowledge so I'll give the flush a miss.
I say every 1000 miles or 6 months what ever comes first, as Cpl. Hicks said in Aliens "It's the only way to be sure".
I have to admit I didn't know how often the PO changed the oil on my 2V 308 so I ran a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil thru the motor for about 300 miles, drained the oil nice and hot for a few hours. It came out black. Replaced with GTX 20/50 and it's been nice and clean ever since. It's burning a little less too. Do a search on it...you will be surprised
