Full disclosure, I have owned BMWs for most of my life, but I have always wanted a Ferrari (since I was like 2). The only Ferrari in my price range (20-30k) appears to be the 1980s Mondial. Every time I mention a Ferrari- especially a Mondial-, everyone says how expensive they are and how it cost a $1,000 for an oil change (does that only apply to 1989 Mondial?)

So what's the verdict: Is a Mondial worth it or should I use my car fund on something else and just keep my Ferrari poster?

    Do a few searches here

The Mondial comes in a few flavors 8, QV 3,3 QV and T

I own the 88 3,2 QV and oil changes definitely are not $1000 - filter cost ~$15 and few quarts of oil

Buy one with a good service history and you will be fine

you drive BMWs that cost $2000 for tires I wouldnt worry about a Mondial!

read the forums and try to do most of the work yourself

These are the easiest of all Ferraris for maintenance. Owners routinely replace water pump, starter, alternator. A local mechanic should not be intimidated by those things. My local mechanic replaced clutch system after I showed him 'birdmans' photo documentation. My mechanic may had never even have seen a Ferrari.

Ferrari electrics are weak. So the windows operate slowly as do wipers. Mine have been doing this for two years and 9,000 miles. And the wipers work when it is raining.

One disconserting issue is the weak starter wiring. Sometimes not enough juice gets to the starter solinoid that is mounted on the starter. This can be remidied with adding a cheap low draw intermediate solinoid to the starter key wires, then run new wires from the added solinoid to the starter solinoid to replace them.

This usually only happens after a hot soak. So even if it happens you can get home. Also, these cars are the easiest cars to jump start I have ever had.
