this summer i have a few projects on the mondial 8 i'll be undertaking. switching from CIS to carbs and swaping out the cams for bigger ones -shhhh don't tell nobody-. i'm also going to drop the fuel tanks and replace all the hoses & clutch job. given that small list i know this can be done with the engine insitu given the space of the bay. what i'd like to know is how much time am i adding or saving to just yank out the motor and go at it?
will the temptation to 'while you there' get me to spend more? yes for me it will this i know. so i'm torn becouse i know that it would be easier doing the cams with the motor out but then i'd be tempted to do more, ugh.
okay will i save alot of time or not? thats what i'm after.

i have already R&R the starter and re-wired the ignition along with replacing the vacume lines and removal of the air pump system. removed and cleaned the headers, all with the motor in the car. and then there was the R&R on the half shafts and CV's. etc...

Scott I presume that your engine still has the sodium filled exhaust valves and if you are going to the effort of removing the cams then I would suggest that you might as well pull the heads and do the valves as well. The rear head can be removed with the engine in situ but the front head is a little more challenging and you would be better off pulling the engine out so you can work on it more comfortably.Pulling the engine out isn't a huge task as long as you have an engine puller and 2-3 men and about 4-5 hours. Then you can clean your engine up while your there and clean up the engine bay as well.Hope this helps

it's a new re-man engine from t-rutlands. current milage on the motor is 12k. i have a lift and could do this in a day but am wondering if it is really worth the time.

Oh Scott, just think how pretty you can make everything with that beast out of there. Call it an extensive 30K service. If I recall our conversation, you were going to use stock carb cams? I wouldnt think you will have any trouble at all.

it may make removing the tanks a little easier (the retaining straps as I'm sure you know are fixed halfway up the firewall!)

Personaly I'd take it out, but only becuase I'd want to clean the engine and bay out whilst it was apart,
other than that leave it in as nothing on a mongo really needs the engine to come out!

Pete its actually realy simple with the mondials

disconect all the hydraulic and electrical conections, make sure nothing is bolted to the bulkheads undo the cable controls (throttle, hand brake) support the engine, undo the 20 or so bolts holding the subframe to the chassis and lift the body up high enough to roll the engine out (wheels stay on) then make up some plates with castors to attach to the front of the subframe so you can wheel at round your workshop, should take less than a day to do properly (my record is around 3 hours!)

Andrew correct me if I'm wrong but this only applies to the Mondial T as I think the other models (Modial 8,QV) require the engine being pulled from the top

I would be interested in what your plans are for the removed CIS unit?

Mine works fine, but I would like to replace some of the components with better looking ones. My plating is kinda dull.

One thing to be careful of when you drop the engine. As soon as the engine is disconnected, the body is going to become quiet nose heavy. Make sure it can't tip fwd & fall off of the lift.

Cheers Andrew, Glad your knowledge extends way past bodywork, is the back end very heavy or does the front end become very light.
Also how many hydraulics are there to remove and are the electricals push in connectors

not sure yet, however the plating on my parts is long gone. and the WUR just crapped out on me. so at this point i'm done with trying to keep the CIS alive.

Please keep me in mind when you pull the CIS unit--it would be safer for me to have extra components replated while I still had the working one to fall back on.

    Thanks,

    Mark
