Hi Guy's, My mechanic told me that my steering-rack is worn-out from my 308 GTB '77 and that I have to fit a complete new rack.So far so good. I told him there are also rebuilt racks for sale or rebuilt this old one. Then he told me that he will never install a rebuilt rack because you cannot trust them driving on the road. My question is : Whats wrong with a rebuilt steering-rack. your opinion will be very welcome. Regards 308ROB
Is he trying to get you to let him rebuild yours? I have never heard of a problem with a rebuilt unit. Do a search, this has been discussed here before. Good luck.
There is nothing wrong with a rebuilt rack. Ferrari does not make new one's so you are limited rebuilt unless you get and aftermarket rack. He's trying to upsell.
I rebuilt the rack in my 308 and it works like a champ. I did a write-up on it a while back but all the pics I posted were lost in the big crash on F-Chat, and since I'm not a paid subscriber I can't post pictures of the rebuild. Good Luck!
Thank you for your quick response, Infact I was also thinking the same way but I needed a second opinion. Dr. Tommy Cosgrove : I did already a search but cannot find a good answer The guy is not trying to rebuilt the rack, I have to go to a special shop. He is only not willing to install the rack in to the car. Maybe he is afraid that after install. something is wrong with the rack and he have to remove it once again. Matteo :I did not go for a aftermarket rack ,but only to rebuilt my own rack or for one in exchange. I'm glad there is notting wrong with a rebuilt, many thanks.regards 308ROB
