Ok guys,my thoughts.Have just done two belt services in the last month on 355 berlinettas.First one, I removed the tank"short cut"and my thoughts are that this is a compromised job...let me explain, access is poor and having to lift the engine/transmission assembly in position to gain access to the crank pulley to partially remove it,re-position the air-con pipes and even to remove the timing covers being careful not to drop the aluminium spacers on the top two cover bolts is a pain in the ass!Anyhow did one last week. This week removed the engine/transmission assembly as normal...as intended by the factory.May take longer but in my opinion doing it the "quick" way is a compromise, always will be.Quality service is'nt expensive,it's priceless.

How long does it take to remove the engine? It seems like it would be so much more comfortable doing the work with the engine out.

I wonder how much more time it takes to complete the service working in tight quarters?
I think its a trade off.

I say take it out. I did the major on my 348, same deal as the 355. After I put the engine back in, it seemed like there is no room in there. It is sooooo much easier to work on the engine with it out. It didn't seem to make sence taking it out at first, but once you are used to working on it out of the car, it makes a whole lot of sence. It took me four hours to remove my engine. That was using two floor jacks and taking the rear bumper off. If I had access to a lift it would be much easier and faster. The only thing that takes long is disconnecting and then draining everything. Once every thing is disconnected the engine comes out in munutes. So I say take it out.

In danger of cutting myself short here, but it is possible....on a perfect clean totally faultless car, with no seized bolts or other damage....to replace belts, A/C gas, engine oil and filter and brake/clutch fluid in about 20 hours, job start from drop off to collection, inc testing.

Now, the rest of the service jobs add time. A DTI timing check adds big time. Oil leaks etc add time blah blah blah.

How long did it take from start to finish to do belts only via the tank out method.....and what was the standard of presentaion of the engine bay afterwards......

Independents here charge 22 hours for engine out belts and annual service on a 355. Does that sound about right?

' That is a little on the low side labor wise but it is within the ball park. Normaly it takes about 32hrs but that includes cleaning the engine and engine bay..and also factors in unforseen things aswell..like hoses etc. Remember a major is not just timing belts. Coolant gets changed, A/C system gets flushed, checked and recharged, brake fluid is changed, all lights and wiper function, is checked among other things. Just to do the belts 22 should cover it, but only the belts.
