    Dan,

You like mild, no? Then look for a Cadenhead's North Port 11. Very good for everyday and only around $100 a bottle. If you like that, you'll love the Cadenhead's Dalluaine 31, more $$ but Fantastic!

Thats not a bad price for a 35 y/o but the taste is always subjective.

Other than the price, what is the attraction to blended scotch's? I never liked scotch until I was turned on to the single malts. Now I have one every evening! I like the GlenX's and Spayburn @ $18-25 a bottle...Yummieee!

You gotta have something to drink with your diet coke, right?

All kidding aside, I recently bought a bottle of jameson 1780 12yr and found it to be very nice. However, for $100/bottle the Macallan 18 is fantastic, and for "high-end" scotch Macallan 1841 and 25yr are suberb. The org. cask strength and 12yr are good for a sip when you're in the mood, as well.

Anyone else care for Laphroaig? I like the 15, 30, and 40 year.

Cadenhead's is a very nice smoooth scotch. A little mild for my taste though.

I like Laphroaig! And having been to Scotland, I find most of the stuff here labeled Sctoch to be the waste the Scot's won't drink. Over there, there are a zillion brands streching the whole spectrum of tastes, but very little in the fire water corner that we tend to get and associate with the word scotch.

As some of you might recall, my Dad was a Naval Aviator. I'm not sure about today's Navy; but back in his day, every Officer had to have two glasses of scotch every night. It was always 5:00 somewhere in the world.

Only problem was that the Navy paid enough for you to afford a mortgage, car payment, and a Amercian Express card. (Everything esle was supposed to be taken care of, e.g., health care and retirement.) As a result everybody learned how to drink the cheap hooch that they sold at the PX.

When I was 12 or so, some buddies and I swiped a bottle and went off into the woods to check this stuff out. We decided that scotch had to be the most evil stuff on the planet.

To make a long story short, my high school graduation present was a suitcase. The day after graduation I hit the road and never looked back. I went my way, and so did he.

However, I count as one of my life's blessings the fact that we made up many years later. Getting drunk with my Dad while we drank his cheap scotch (Sir Malcom) on the patio overlooking the water in Florida was beyond priceless.

In fact, I still have a bottle of that rotgut. Every now and then, I break it out and drink a toast to the old man. The moral being that the best scotch depends upon who you drink it with, not the number of years in the barrel.

    Dale

ps My regular drink is Mac Cask Strength. I really like the smokey taste.

My favorite is Johny Walker Blue. It runs around $180 but well worth it.

ironic. my story is the opposite. for my HS grad gift, my old man hit the road, left his family behind, and has yet to look back. (i did get to keep his last bottle of scotch, tho.)

    My favorites:

    Islays:
Lagavulin (Smokier and smoother than Laphroaig)
    Bowmore
    Bunnahabhain
    Laphroaig

    Highlands:
Macallan 18 (I like it a little better than the 25 for some reason...)
Dalmore - try it. IMO one of the best scotches for the price....
    Aberlour - another good deal...

    Islands:
    Highland Park

I always keep a bottle of Drambuie around too. Mix it 50/50 with a decent highland for a rusty nail. No ice though...

As always, Dale's right on the mark about how to properly drink any malt beverage...

i'm suprised nobody has mentioned Springbank, it's one of my fav's and can be $$$ depending on what you're used to.

    the regulars are:
macallan 12yrs sherry oak finish, not available state side.
    balvenie 21yr portwood
Suntory 12yr (father-in law picked it up in Japan) not bad but...
Bowmore (any year) gets a little peaty ;)
    Glen Merangie (sp?)
crap it's getting late and I have forgotten how to spell and can't remember all the single malts in the bar at home. up here in El Dorado checking on the property for the new house.

but cutting to it, i'll never understand the allure of the blended ones. at least blended malts are called whiskeys and not scotch's. been meaning to take the trail in Scotland one year, seeing as how most of the fam comes from there.

gotta find me a 30yr springbank neat to finish off the night, off to the bar...

Springbank is my favorite as well. By FAR the best! I just wasn't recommending $400 plus bottles as entry level. I have a 1966 and a 1967 Murray McDavid cask Springbank that that I'm waiting for a couple of special occasions to open.

I have a suggestion for you if you like the Islays. Try to find a "Stillmans Dram" Bruichladdich 26. EXCEPTIONAL!

i'll look tomorrow, i like adding to my repatoire. personally for me the cost of scotch is well worth it once you put it to your lips. every winter when we go up to mammoth and sit out in the snow with a bottle of my fav and watch the stars. we set up a 12" telescope last year and ending up being up all night. that was reall nice. like to pass on memories like that to my son one day.

for beginers i'd say start with something light, a Macallen or Glen is good. age is very dependent becouse to me the older ones are more finished and mellow but still strong and the young ones are harsh with a bite. sounds like people:)

i think one of the reasons i like scotch so much is that i have a strange love for rolled oats. i have eaten that almost every day for over 30yrs.

before i forget for those interested the TamO' Shanter inn hosts scotch dinners. one year they brought over Bowmore, i lost count of how much scotch was flowing, ended up taking a limo home. i went with my father-in law and both he and I got doubles of everything becouse my wife and her mother don't like scotch so we had theirs. their out in the glendale area i think. it was a favorite haunt of walt disney.
