I have been considering tucking the bumbers on my 308 qv, what will this do to resale ? concours points ?? (The car is completely stock except for tweeters in the doors over the factory speaker areas and aluminum pedals) How is the best way to do it ? I've heard you just pop the bumpers shock seals ??? Thoughts/ advice please. Thanks John
I think it definitely improves the looks of the car, so do what makes you happy, to hell w/ the purists....and judges!!
Six of one ........half a dozen of the other...... I have one of each,.........LOL! If you do drill/defeat the shock assembly I'd screw/bolt/tack weld at new position to restore strength.......
Call me crazy, but I don't personally mind the "stuck out" look of the US bumpers on my 308. Maybe due to the fact that this is how I first saw a 308, many years ago (Magnum P.I.). I don't get the appeal of the Euro bumpers, even though I realize this is how the car was originally designed..... Call me crazy, but don't call me collect......! Greg
Well the Euro bumpers are little strips of fibreglass, so they save mucho weight... That's the original difference. You'll note ours have the reveal line that I think was originally intended to match the edge of the sheet metal.... The great debate rages on........ Jtranfield just fitted glass bumpers, he'd know the weight difference. I held one of my bumpers once, off the car. It was HEAVY! Or I'm just a weakling......or both......
If you want to tuck 'em, just drill a very small hole through each shock (wear goggles and a "work" shirt), then gently tap, with your rubber mallet. By doing this, you'll shorten your 308 by darn near a foot. The good thing about the US bumpers is that they stick out sufficiently for 2 people to sit on them and have a picnic lunch together - which was probably the original intent.
I say tuck 'em or put on the euro bumpers. It just looks more graceful to me. I drilled a 1/16" hole in the inner half of the shock which lets the gas escape then beat it in with a rubber mallet. I've tried pulling mine back out by hand and they won't budge. I've heard of some people putting small set screws in once they get them set back.
The bumpers look better sticking out, the way Magnum's car was! You lose the cool "pointy" look when you tuck them! If you want the Euro look, get Euro bumpers and save the weight too. But remember, if you actually get bumped (lightly) with a USA bumper, your car will be OK. If you get bumped with a Euro bumper or a tucked bumper, you might bend some metal. The bumpers are actually there for a reason! Birdman
I just tucked mine. I am very pleased with the new look. A 1/16" hole with a stainless screw. Done!!!!
You guys using mallets are lightweights! I pushed mine in using JRVs OTHER Ferrari! Put in reverse, ....and SMACK! THAT's the First Class way to do it.............LOL! Sorry, JR! I agree with those that argue the larger extension is more suitable for US traffic conditions, which now make these comparatively SMALL cars.....you're hit.........you lose.
The front bumpers and rear also for that matter isn't going to hit anything on all the soccer mom's suv's almost every bumper on the road is talling then my door handles, What are they gonna keep me safe from ? suburban vs. a 308, I'm like a bug, squuuuiiiiish !!
