    Hello Fellow "F"-Chatters,

I'm working with a 79 308GTB, as I take the nuts/bolts/washers and etc. I've been taking them to a plate shop for zinc plating. I guess my question is how many of those item were in fact actualy "zinc" plated or "cad" plated. Obviously I'd like to do the correct plating on the correct items. Apprecaite your help!

    Thank you,

    Chris.

I wasn't in Italy at that time, but in the US (early '60s I worked daily with MIL-F-14072), protective finish of choice for ferrous metal fasteners was cad iridite. Since then, environmental concerns have switched the military, electronics, and automotive users to lesser quality, but adequate, zinc and nickel coatings. Cadmium allows an extremely thin coating soas not to affect part tolerances.

The platings must also be coated with a chromate (iridite). Chromates can be clear but is commonly specified light yellow to visually prove the chromate process was done...otherwise a chemical test of proof must be performed or the parts tossed as without chromate you will still get pinhole rusting
