Here in Alberta, Canada, that speed would net you a mandatory 6 demerit point "dangerous driving" ticket.......a $750 fine and a 6 month driving suspension.

The real penalty, however, is what the insurance company will do to you at renewal time..........$$$$$

Guys what you are writing there scares me. Going to jail for speeding. Easier to ban the importation of fast cars into the US.

    Tarek.....

I was in Cairo........well Ismailia actually........for 6 months back in 77-78......is it still standard practice to pile a cairn of rocks on the road behind your car when it is broken down ?

We saw many an accident caused by driver's flying along at night and running into these rockpiles that the people left behind when they removed their vehicles after making repairs.

IIRC....speed limits.....well, back then they were just a suggestion and never enforced.......as your post confirms today.

Best part of that license suspension is I have a California drivers license. Which means that 60 days only holds up in Virginia. I'm free everywhere else.

What state has enough money to put people in jail for 6 months to a year for speeding?

Well, we here in Europe just see your movies how cops act with speeding.
If i read the jail thingy again here, unbelievable...

You people must get wet dreams about the German autobahn which starts half an hour from here.
As fast as you can, and everybody is used to traffic with very high speeds.

And accidents ? Nah, nothing special really as the cars have the setup for it unlike most of the soft-weaky-suspensioned US cars.

When will the first Fchat Nurburgring trip be organized? You'll have the time of your life with some rental cars.

And Mr. Cairo... I was in Hurghada 2 months ago for holidays.
Wow... 90% of the cars is 20 years old and nobody, really nobody switches the lights on in the dark !!! They just blink a few times when they get really close, like 30 meters. Heh heh.... :)

^^ I second that, recently got convicted on a dropped sentence from 141 kmh in 100 kmh to just 29 kmh over the limit. My 1st speeding offence, my insurance is now increased $1200 per year as per my last renewal (on a toyota!). I'd rather go to jail for 3 days. Good luck, stay safe, as someone else mentioned, dont drop the soap.

Thank all the do gooders, MADD, the insurance industry along with many other organizations that have lobbyed to pass all these harsh laws that take our freedoms away, suspended licenses is the norm for not paying the smallest of infractions, the State wants its money. Meanwhile car thiefs are not prosecuted and slapped on the wrist along with other so called petty crimes such as burglary.

Have to agree. When you think about it what agency, company, government etc, doesn't want you to speed?

got a 140 mph radar ticket on my bike dropped. long story but because they lost sight they could not prosecute. I NEVER admitted to anything, kept my mouth COMPLETELY shut during the whole arrest. I highly suggest excersing the right to remain silent if you are 100% waaay in the wrong. Let the lawyers do their jobs.

My 430 is so hot it is very hard to be a good citizen and obey all speed limit laws. I didn't have near as much trouble in my other cars. It just wants to go.

This thread is thought provoking. Without meaning to hi-jack it or inflame, I wonder where that leaves most of us. I have owned hi-performance cars for a while- since the early seventies and have seen the changes in the law- and increasing intolerance for speeding per se. (I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT RECKLESS DRIVING OR SPEEDING IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE THAT PUTS ANYONE ELSE AT RISK). I know one common answer is "take it to the track" but that has its own limitations- not the least of which is that I do not want to confine myself to laps- I like 'touring' and the changes in. topography, geography and environment, having sites to visit, destinations to aim for, etc. Putting one's foot down in a high performance car is more and more like roulette, from a legal, not just a safety point of view. I suppose one answer is santioned events- but the risk there is running with people that can get out of hand- personally I like driving in groups less and less for that reason. Another alternative is vintage sportcars which can give you the buzz at lower speeds although reliability and to some extent comfort become an issue on long distance drives. Having a "supercar" and being able to drive it at anywhere near its potential (not its limits) is now a very risky proposition indeed!
Good luck on your "stretch". I wonder whether the rest of us think about jail time or worse each time we strap in....

"Having a sharp snake for a lawyer and my service record with 2 combat tours was the winning combination here I think."

So the Commonwealth sent, off to jail, a guy with two combat tours - because he'd been speeding. I'm a member of the Virginia bar, and I find that incredibly chicken, stupid and pathetic. If you want my full name and bar number to lodge a disciplinary complaint, please PM me - and make sure you spell everything correctly. Unable to do much about drugs and gangs in Fairfax County, the local judiciary wages war on speeding! Morons.

I got pulled for doing about 80 in a 55, the cop asked where I bought my 911, and I said Foreign Cars Italia (this was in Greensboro, NC). He said I should take it easy since I had such a poweful car and let me go without even a written warning.
Turns out the dealership had done a nice turn for one of the other cops on his wedding anniversay and loaned him a nice car for the day to spend with his wife....now that is a dealership looking out for their customers!

    Here's a bit of advice.

Drive your car as if the "slow down" lights came on! You might find you'll not be in this situation again.

Ever since I was 16 I have hated the State of Virginia. Any state that makes radar detectors illegal and life this hard for such a small infraction sucks. Do what I do, and stay out of the state if at all possible. I still can't figure out why Ferrari of Washington built their dealership in Virginia. I get nervous every time I take the car in for service. I wouldn't be happy with jail time I would be pissed off with the state.

So go figure this state. I lived most of my life in Maryland adn have now lived in VA for two years. While I have been pulled over here in my Dinan S-2 at 90+ on the Beltway and got a ticket, I have also been pulled out of an F-Car train on a drive (on FFX Parkway) and was told he couldn't write a ticket for such a beautiful car.

What I CAN do in this state is carry a concealed weapon, so go figure.

As to why FoW built in NoVA and Grand Touring moved here? Business. Period. Maryland sucks for business owners. M corporation is technically a MD corp, but I'd rather it be here in VA or in NJ where our other office is.

Back to the thread - sorry to hear about the outcome, but the potential outcome could have been far worse. Sorry you have to flee to Kalifornia!

    When I was in Virginia...

Friends got busted for drinking in public (no one was drunk or rowdy), at a backyard cookout, on private property.

Two other friends had too much to drink after leaving the bar. So they passed out in the front seats parked along the curb (valid parking). The cops came by, woke up the driver and arrested him for dui. Then they woke the passenger, asked him to step out and then arrested him for being drunk in public.

If you bought a car or property they'd hijack your state residency and start charging you for income tax. Being an exempt GI from CT I filed a complaint, which fell on deaf ears, so I asked "what kind of State is is? They kindly replied "This isn't a state, it's a Commonwealth".

That was back in the early 80's and by the looks of this thread I guess it hasn't changed very much.

Hang in there and then get way out as soon a you can.
