Guys, Currently I'm overseas (ME) and there's not much to do on my off time, so today I was searching Google Video for old Live Stevie Wonder performances (just wanted to check it out, since I really haven't seen any), as well as Ray Charles, Allman Bros, and Van Halen W/ DLR. That leaves me to say, What's happened to music? 99% of todays Music is Total Garbage, and I was wondering if that's it for music now and in the future? Nothing but talentless crap, and karaoke artists? I have to say some of the old Stevie Wonder performances are rediculously Amazing. Truly a musical Genius. Jim
i hate todays music. i never listen to the radio for any of the latest crap. aside from trance music, i never keep myself updated with todays music. i'm still stuck with beatles, deep purple, aerosmith, bon jovi, led zeppelin, dire straights, queen, to name a few
I know what you mean. If I have the radio on, it's usually on the local sports station. Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, Hendrix just brought it. Hendrix at the Fillmore East is just rediculous. Led Zepplin, no rock guitarist can jam like Paige did. Rock mixed with Jazz/blues/metal/rockabilly all improvised.
It cracks me up how they combine bands, like xxx with yyy, or xxx and yyy, or xxx & yyy along with zzz......... Mix them all up, trying to find the 'spark'. (c)rap + (c)rap = better(c)rap?
Combining musicians from different ensembles is not groundbreaking - Jazz and Blues, for example. As vocals go, both have roots in having mysterious lyrics - hidden messages in field hollers and shouts, communicated in plain sight of "master" or law. That tradition carries on with latest catch-phrases about rims slung about while the lyrics and "artist" talk about how great they are. Beats hearkened back to the most primitive - staff against hard earth became pick against hardpan, hoe upon soil, breaking ground into finer particles, sledgehammer driving spikes, with emulators now doing all the work. I could prattle on, but, simply, with emphasis on the moving image [sometimes megalomaniacal as is the case with Kanye West] matching the beat, Pop Music in it's many guises has lost it's way, as there's precious little quality musicianship in the offing, while merchandising image sells, sells, sells. Save for the White Stripes, who tip their hat to Blues, Rock has crawled under a rock and has been replaced by buzzing hornets. Whiners, at that. The new, new, new Country Music seems to be the only thing going right with blending traditions, old and new. But, some fake cowboys are talking about how great they are, too. My guitar gently weeps.
There are lots of groups out there doing good music. There is the folk music of Devendra Banhart ( Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon). Check out the Beach Boys Vs Space Rock of Panda Bear (Person Pitch). New London Girl Groups like The Broken Hearts or The Pipettes are realy great. Amy Winehouse Back to Black is fantastic as well. LCD Sound System is another band to check out. Im 50 and I like the old stuff as well but there is some new music that is just as good but it is harder to find than in the past. KALX radio Berkley plays some good newer music.
Once we get past the "rapcrap" phase thing will get better. Hopefully most of the kids will be deaf before age 20 and won't be able to hear the junk out there. I just put in Blood , sweat and tears in my 8 track and roll on.
Ditto that! Also, I think there is a lot to be said about the influence of technology. Not only has the focus been on creating stars rather than promoting talent (voice quality is easily fixed in production after all), but bands don't write albums any more. Forget about anything like The Wall, Tommy, etc. The entire concept of album flow is lost because it's all about that one single.
There are some really good bands out there today. IMO, the only music genre that is timeless is rock. There are so many different sounds of rock (pop rock not included). I'm still partial to bands that sort of have that grunge sound. Funny that at the time grunge was looked at as a fad, yet it brought out some legendary bands. And is now looked at as a great "era" of music. Even the one hit wonders actually had good cd's, they just failed.
Generally today has poor music (how's that for syntax!)?. I do like the newish Wolfmother CD for a classic rock influenced band. White Stripes is nice, Beck never fails to make good music. You can always listen to Zappa or Stevie Ray Vaughn. BT
Sucks don't it? Rock isn't what it used to be that is for sure. A lot of rock producers left LA and went to Nashville, so I'm hearing a lot of rock production techniques being applied to country. It's kinda weird sometimes. There is still some great country being produced these days though, thankfully. There are a few bands out there that are killer, they're just harder to find than they used to be. It's a very trying time in the biz right now, so a lot of great bands aren't making it with the crazy marketing like they used to. They're out there, you just don't hear about them as much.
Has anybody noticed that MTV doesn't play Music Videos anymore ? Somebody mentioned that to me, and you know, of all the times I channel surf, I don't recall seeing an actual music video in about 2 years. It never even dawned on me...
Bluesy such as Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, etc is hard to find among todays artist except for White Stripes, Wolfmother and a few others. Metal on the other hand is doing quite well and there are tons of great new bands.
Metal bands are probably the most talented bands instrumentally. The only thing is that metal has become too predictable in it's format, so it's hard for me to listen to it. Plus a lot of those bands try too hard.
exacly the feelin' I get listening to alot of today's music. I've just recently been dating a woman who loves some of this, what I call "dark" music, I don't understand it at all. She say's it captures "today's angst?" Whatever trips your trigger. Heck, I'm startin' to like Doris Day's Que Sera, Sera! Beautiful voice. Nice melody. Great message. It's got it all. I listen to alot of that "kind" of music. I like gospel stuff too. Never was a metal head though. Always liked "story tellers".
Everyone needs to check out "The Black Keys" for blues/rock, amazing 2 person band. like the white stripes only better IMO. saw them live a few weeks back, one of the best concerts I've ever been to
It'll be the same as it always was. "Pop" music will suck while more underground, indie music will appeal to a certain audience.
I'm a child of the 80s. But even before that, remember Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Led Zep, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Mel Torme, Ella, Dinah Washington, the Big Bands; and going a bit further back in time, Debussy, Chopin, Bach (believe it or not, these and all their contemporaries were also 'today's music' once upon a time!). btw...how you doin', Jim?
I enjoy The Black Keys. I've never seen them live but do own their DVD. They are compared to The White Stripes, but I hear little similarity. My favorite three bands are: The Rolling Stones, the Beatles, and Pink Floyd. But I also occasionally find a new band that I enjoy: Muse, Radiohead, The Killers, and Modest Mouse. The White Stripes do have the prettiest rock and roll drummer:
Most of my kids (19-22) won't listen to the current stuff either. My oldest has stolen all of my LPs and a turntable and is playing the last mm of sound out of my 60's and 70's record collection in his apartment. I guarantee I can't tell you the last time I listened to a radio station playing the current hits. I leave the XM radio on comedy, BBC and/or 60's and 70's music stations. The Ferrari has an IPOD in it with 400 songs, and none were recorded after the late 70's. I dunno 'bout you guys, but I don't hear any music in much of what the radio plays these days. DM
