Been having a root around under the car (1994 - 2.7 355) as you do, and have noticed a single black wire which is inboard of the front hub, and connected to the front hub via a spade connector near where the bolt heads are for the front wheel bearing.

Anybody know what this is and which system it belongs to ? Looks like an earth connection to me but seems in a funny place !.

    Best regards

Picture? You can usually tell the oem wiring and aftermarket stuff.

Took a pile out of my 355, with a load more to come!

You'll also have a wire for a brake pad wear signal.

    Thanks for the replies folks.

Picture is spot on Jeff by the way so thanks for posting - the black plastic spade connector I was on about being clearly visible to the left of the roadspring.

Anybody know what it does ?. Have had another look and found that the wire is not actually even attached to the connector - on either side !. They haven't snapped or even been disconnected as far as i can tell - just seems to have pulled out. That'll be good then!.

    Here we go again.

mmmm....I'd plug them in and see what happens. By rights the ABS light should be illuminated to warn of an electrical fault - does teh ABS light up briefly when you turn the ignition on?

Do you mean the brake warning light, Jeff? The brake warning light only comes on if the light gets an earth, so with the leads hanging off, no earth (unless they touch something metallic).

When starting the engine (cranking), the light should also illuminate. A test module provides an earth for the light.

No -- he means the ABS warning light on the RH side of the instrument pod (which is probably orange or yellow, not red). See Section G (brakes) of your OM -- the ABS warning light should illuminate for a few seconds when you turn the key "on" and then go out (to let you know the bulb is working). If it stays constantly illuminated = the ABS system has a fault. If yours never illuminates = someone probably removed the bulb in the dash to mask having an ABS fault ;).

Steve, I think it was agreed that the wire was the for brake wear. The brake pad wear sensors are linked to the [BRAKE] on US cars or , on Euro cars, the [(!)] light.

Reference WSM Wiring Diagram Figure 5. The BRAKE light is illuminated during start by "test device" 06625 (Ferrari part number 61830700). The wiring is pink. The Ferrari wiring diagrams show light "f" on the left side of the binnacle (EDIT: so there must be variations between cars).

What you say about the ABS light is correct (for ABS faults and test).

Jeff, your text clearly says that "3" illuminates for brake wear (which is not the ABS light)

Gottaloveit, if you have a '94 car, I'm assuming you live outside the USA and have a non-airbag steering wheel?

Your instruments look something like this?

Jeff, I just noticed you posted part of the 348 manual, not the 355 2.7. Operation will be similar, but the warning lights are in different positions.

For info: USA/Cananda/Japan part number quoted for brake light test device. The Euro/Rest of World part number is 137667.

.... but I digress. Gottaloveit, short one of the brake wear sensors to earth and see which light illuminates on the dash (with the car running).

I'm not sure that that's really been determined (the ABS cable has two connections, but it is a shielded coaxial cable so would look like "a single black wire"). What we need is Gottaloveit to confirm/deny if his ABS light (#13 in your figure) does the self-test correctly, or not. Maybe the brake pad wear sensor did just accidentally get unplugged; however, it seems more likely to me that someone would try unplugging the ABS sensors if struggling with an ABS light wrongly staying "on" (although unplugging them would not extinguish a constantly "on" ABS light).

Understood, but doesn't that still match Gottaloveit's original description of "a single black wire"? Do you know if the wire for the brake pad wear sensor is also black? (The one Jeff posted isn't, but maybe that's 348, or the chassis side of the wire is black, or they vary?)

NB Just before I say anymore better mention that I have a 1990 348 with an Teves ABS system fitted with a 355 ABS ECU.

The pad wear sensor is a round wire which if you have the car in front of your should be traceable back to the brake caliper. If the pad wear ie the disc wears the plastic away so the disc comes into contact with wiring embeded n the sensor the handbrake/ebrake light illuminates permanently.

Light 2 on mine is the ABS warning light.

With regard to the ABS sensor shown above the light coloured end is connected near the top of damper strut inside teh frunk underneath the carpet (and was the cause of my persitant abd warning light - just needed cleaning and reassembling) and teh other end is bolted into top of axle stub to read the toothed ring in teh same way as your crank positions sensors on teh front of teh engine.

Seems we were all confused. I had a look at the front RH wheel on my '98 F355 found the following:

A soft (feeling) conduit comes out of the wheel arch (with the two rigid ones for the ABS sensor and hydraulic line).

The soft one splits into two black smaller branches
    Image Unavailable, Please Login
One branch goes to the earth lug on the hub (This is a spade connector with a black wire on it). This sounds like the mystery wire. I guess if nothing is wrong with the car, the earth lug may just be there for a more reliable return path for the brake wear sensor?

The wiring diagrams show the brake wear sensor as having two wires on it, but this is clearly a misrepresentation.

This is all great stuff lads, thanks. Qavion's last diagram seems spot on to me with the earth lead clearly shown (earth lug on hub).

Do you know, I've had this car for 7 years now and I don't ever remember consciously clocking the ABS light coming on during start up (or the ABS pump come to think of it ! - I also have an 89 XJS with the Teves ABS system and that chimes in every time I switch the ign on) - more investigation required. Will try and have a look over the next few days and post result .

    Thanks

Managed to have a look see yesterday and check everything out, and much to my surprise ( and no small amount of relief !) I do indeed have working ABS on the car. Who knew !. Being RHD you can't hear the ABS pump in the left wing come on. Duh !.
Thanks to everyone for chiming in, really appreciated your input and knowledge - been a really useful exercise in getting to know and understand the systems in these fantastic cars even more.
Quick shout out to the gent who posted a film on Youtube that I referenced - its on the 348 ABS system (chap goes under Sonordrum on Y'tube) - I think he's on F'chat too - terrific info on there so yeah, thank you Sir.

Good to hear you're back in business.

Seems those earth wires are rather fragile. The wire came out of the back of the spade connector when I was checking my setup. Thankfully, I had some crimpers handy.
