Todt: F1 Return to V8 Engines Will Never Happen

We will see, but the title of the article is misleading.

They keep the same engine basically.

Noisier and cheaper maybe, but they won't abandon the hybrid technology.

2 turbos instead of 1, and no more MGU-H, but still MGU-K.

 

It is a backward step though.

I would like them to have 2 turbos and keep electric motors to boost the turbos, but if we must drop the generating electricity from the turbos ... but saying that watching these modern nancy pancy drivers deal with turbo lag will be amusing

To make this better, I would like to have them drop the fly-by-wire throttles and mandate a cable has to be directly connected from the accelerator pedal to the engine throttle butterflies. This will make the cars heaps harder to drive as currently the fly-by-wire throttles do clever things to linearise the torque curve.

Yes, technically it's a step backward, probably to appease the critics.

But I wouldn't expect the noise to go a lot louder.

Time will tell.

 

Drive by wire throttle operation has been a mainstay in road cars for well over a decade. So that would truly be a step backward.

 

Todt: F1 will never go all-electric

Jun.15 - Jean Todt says F1 will never abandon its petrol-based origins and join Formula E as an all-electric powered series.

"It's impossible," the FIA president told La Presse newspaper.

"F1 is an absolutely different discipline," he insisted.

Todt said he is a great supporter and fan of Formula E, but he thinks F1 took the right path by heading in the hybrid direction a few years ago.

"It is a huge step forward compared to what we had before," said the Frenchman.

However, Todt also said the progress made by Formula E since its inception has been "remarkable".

"We have a dozen manufacturers who want to get involved, and have been approached by some of the biggest cities in the world," he said.

"Today there are brands like Renault that are in F1 and Formula E."

And Todt was also quoted by Le Journal de Montreal: "I am confident that one day Ferrari will follow suit, and we would like to see that."

You made my point; Honda joined late and was never able to catch up.

 

Just shut it and bring back those V10s Todt.

I actually like that idea. change the type of fuel used... and then open up the rules on the engines. but the petro companies will shut that down in a heart BEAT. perhaps a mix? only x amount of petro, then switch to a less dense fuel?

 

The BMW Turbo didn't take 3 years, and the BEAST motor Penske made did not even
take a full year.

 

But they were far less complicated.
