I'm 80% yes on a move to Japan about 6 months from now. I've never been there and have limited access to people who have lived there. Anything I "must know"?

I'll be renting a place when I first get there, and I've already heard about the 3 months security deposit and 3 month key (sp?) money. I've gotten nothing in the way of tax tips, and would appreciate anything anyone could offer. Also, what is it like getting prescriptions over there? My wife is currently on thyroid medication and we'd need to continue that for a little while.

Anything else? Any "must have" books or guides I need to pick up before going? Someone know a good book/tape/tutorial I can pick up now to help me learn Japanese? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Are you aware that living cost is quite high there? Don't be surprised everything you buy will cost more. If you can adjust your diet to Asian staff, it's much cheaper.
Tokyo is quite big city, although size itself is not. Do you know which district/city of Tokyo you will be at? Public transportation, like train & bus, is very good, and its main transportation method in Tokyo. Taxi is easy to catch on most street, and if you call taxi company, they'll usually send someone w/in 5-10 minutes.
If you are temporary working in Japan for, say 5 years, you can take care most of your tax in the USA. What is your visa?
Getting prescription is rather easy. Make sure to get a carte from your current doctor, and bring it with you there. Bring 2 weeks of supply just in case. You may have hard time locating the type of doctors you need in the neighborhood since you'll need some translation.
My kids uses a computer software to learn Japanese, and they spoke pretty good when we visited there, not fluent but enough to communicate.
There is also electronic dictionary w/ sound. You input English & it will sound out & shows in Japanese or vise versa. I don't know how accurate, but it'll do for basic communication.
Let me know if you have any more ??, I just don't know where to start!
