As soon of you know, I took my wife and daughter to Dallas for Spring break. Despite pumping several thousands of dollars into the local economy, apparently the Great State of Texas deemed it not enough.

Yesterday, I received a bill in the mail for apparently using a Toll road while we were there. To be honest, I don't ever remember using a toll road, nor did I deliberately do it. As such, I don't think it's fair that I should be penalized for it.

Although we don't have any of these Toll Cameras in Mississippi or Alabama, I've run into a similar system in Florida whereby I received a bill in the mail several months later: Thousands receive collection notices after vacationing in FL - WSMV Channel 4

So my question is if any F-chatters have experience with, or can recommend, a good anti-photo license plate cover to be used when travelling out of state?

Well, if mythbusters is to be believed, none of them work, at least not legally.

In FL, if you obscure any part of the plate it's a $163 fine. NC - $100, PA - $100

How much could the toll charges be that it's a good idea to obscure your plate? Just go get an EZ pass, then if you go on a toll road that's not clearly marked, you can respond to the ticket/fine/bill you get in the mail with your EZPass account # and the extra charges should go away.

You need to tell him where to look for the locations because I couldn't even find them.

Seriously? You're gonna go to the mattress over a couple of bucks? Personally, I think toll roads are great, and the cameras make it even better. I'd much rather see roads paid for by private investors than my tax dollars.

Thanks, Tom. Doubt I'll be in Texas again anytime soon (the last time was 1993) but I appreciate the effort.

To me, it's not the $12 penalty but the principle of the matter.

Found this out by accident in Baltimore. If the car you drive has the ability to accept a trailer hitch, put a hitch on it & get a hitch mount bike rack. Put bike rack into hitch. The upright of the rack blocks the center part of the license plate. Bonus points if you put a bike on the rack (I had my frame on the rack, wheels in back seat). Never got a bill.

Great idea! My wife's suv came with a dealer-added hitch. :)

Although you can pay a lot of tolls for what a hitch & rack run.

First of all get a copy of your plate printed. There is sites online you can order them. They are just regular plastic and look like the normal plates of your state. Perk is they are not coated in the reflected pro photo junk normal plates are. Then if you combine the anti photo spray and one of those dimming covers it works to block photos.

Alternatively you can just take your plate off. I've been driving for 3 years now with no plate on my car. Got two tickets both dismissed. Been pulled over a total of probably 5 times in 3 yrs for it. Give them a story I was parked at airport and someone jacked it. It's just so hard and confusing to get it replaced who do i call how do i do it? Since airport has its own police its a mess and the officer who pulls you over will very rapidly lose interest and want to leave. Admittedly it probably wouldn't work as well if its a crappy car vs a sports car.

This. A coworker has had a bike rack on the back of her SUV for as long as I've known her. She doesn't ride, she avoids $6/day in tolls.

So, she found a deceptive way to use a service without paying for it. Pretty sure that's theft :)
