I recently became a non-smoker about 3 months ago and I've had no problems what so ever! I came back on a long haul flight from the states and knew that if I could go for 13 hours with no ***s then I could go longer.

If you, yourself personally, does not want to stop then you WILL fail. You have to stop for yourself and your own reasons and no-one elses. I’ve stopped plenty of times for other people only to find myself cheating and lying so that I could save face. Eventually I’d give in and feel bad that I’d let the other person down as well as myself.

My personal story is relevant to this site really. I was spending nearly £200/month on cigs and I knew that if I stopped that extra cash could help towards buying a Ferrari. I’m picking up a F355 Spider in a couple of weeks!!!

My choice was Ferrari or smoking..................What do you guys think is the best option?

The reward far outweighed the sacrifice so I've found it very very easy to become a non-smoker. I'd tried 4 or 5 times before but always failed. I wanted a Ferrari so bad that I’d even sacrifice the one thing I really enjoyed doing. Funny, I don’t miss it at all now!

Take each second at a time. A craving only lasts 5 minutes then your brain is already onto the next thing and you've forgotten about sparking up. The mental addiction is the only addiction as your body tries to get rid of the poison as soon as it enters your body. Within the hour your body has got rid of most of the nicotine! Don't tell yourself or anyone else that you're TRYING to stop smoking, tell them that you don't smoke. Not, 'I don't smoke anymore,' simple that you don't smoke. You'll convince yourself sure enough.

There's far too much for me to say about this matter in a post so PM if you like.

Otherwise, enjoy your new life as a non-smoker it’s really easy!

I quit several years ago and used Zyban, it really seemed to help me. It was a prescription pill at the time. I had tried using the patches and they just didn't seem to help me much. I have to tell you guys that no matter what you use it won't be easy. Not trying to scare you, on the contrary I'd like to encourage you!

I still fight it on an almost daily basis but it was one of the best decisions I ever made! I don't wake up in the morning coughing up half a lung EVERY day. I don't smell like an ashtray. I don't have to worry when I leave the house whether I have enough smokes to last all day.

Whatever you chose, stick to it and "Get Er Done", you won't regret it!!

Oh, by the way, not sure how much the cig's cost you but when I quit (and remember it's been a few years ago), I figured I was saving something like $1500-$2000 a year. Not gonna make you rich but it would buy some new Ferrari parts!! This was one of my stategies, I figured how much money I was going to save and spent it on myself. More motivation!!

Good Luck, I hope you follow through!!

Been trying to decide on a day to quit myself... maybe we can do it together?

I`ve been on 20 a day consistently for 25 years... daunting prospect, but it`s` GOT to be done!

What do ya reckon, strength in numbers?

    Just do it!

I was smoking 1 1/2 packs of regular Marlbro a day for a couple of years, and quit for the family. As noted above, you have to deal with both the physical and habit aspects. I hated the smell & cost, but was very physically addicted - I NEEDED that smoke, or I felt like sh_t.

To deal with the physical part, I switched to Marlbro lights, and tapered down to 1/2 a pack a day (over a week or two). Then went cold turkey - and felt rotten for two weeks. After that I started feeling better. Slowly.

To deal with the habit, I picked up a lovely addiction to coffee! Don't compulsively eat instead - that may seem to help, but in the end you just get fat (ask me how I know).

I have a friend who stopped smoking a year ago, and he used the 3 step Nicotine patch (lowering doses), and was successful.

Now I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke, and have become quite sensitive to it - some kind of perverse reaction, I don't know. It's been years now, and I have zero desire for one.

Be realistic about how long you have to stay focused on being a non-smoker before it just becomes natural. It probably won't happen overnight, but will over a couple of weeks.

    Best of luck,
    Jon

I never thought of the money side much, lets see a pack costs £5.00 = £10.00 a day = £70.00 a week = £280.00 a month = £3.360.00 a year, wow that is a lot of money going up in smoke  over 20 years that is £67.200.00, that is a Ferrari gone up in smoke.

I was a 2 pack/day smoker for 10 years. I quit cold turkey with the patch almost 13 years ago. They work. Here's the trick. The smoking urge is strong but short lived, maybe 2-3 minutes. Just hold on for that small amount of time and you'll be ok. At first, the urge comes frequently. Every day you hold out though, the time between urges grows longer.

Just trust in this and you'll see.

The other thing that helped me was that on the 3rd day in, I was surrounded by smokers, inhaled alot of smoke and got very, very sick. That feeling, when relived, was also strong deterrent.

If it's any help I gave up when I was 20 (an extremely long and distant memory). I haven't missed them one bit and Iwas smoking same amount as you. The deciding factor for me was a bet with my family and mates. If you started smoking again you had to forfeit the money that we all put into the kitty. If we all stopped for a year you got your share (or shares) back. The catch was that we all bet 2 months wages so it was a pretty good frightener. It worked for all of us so I hope you all succeed.
    Good Luck

....gave up on May 1, 1996, after 15 years or so....It was probably the hardest thing I ever pulled off. I have not touched one since, as I do not have a personality (discipline) for partial /social drinking type of indulgence. First two weeks are hell, 3 months you start to think about it less and less. 3 years is no more major cravings.
It is never a good time to quit. I tried when I was busy and I tried when I was bored. I would always talk myself into lighting up. It is a controlling drug.
I finally did it to spite myself, to prove that I could. It was getting to be such a hassle in the USA, particularly in California.
Just do it. Not because it is expensive, not because of health, but because it is controlling you, and not the other way around.

Good luck to all of you in your quest. From what my patients tell me and what others have said here, quitting smoking is one of the hardest things one can do. However, it is the single most important thing someone can do to improve ones health. In my line of work the VAST majority of my patients are smokers and they got to me because they smoke. As on of my partners tell our patients: "I don't care if you smoke it, chew it, or shove it up your ass, it is bad for you".

    Best of luck!

    GOOD LUCK GUYS!!!

I hope you have the will and strength needed to quit.

Watch someone die from them, slowly, and it tends to help you make up your mind.

My Mother in Law was still smoking through the hole in her throat 'till the day she died.

Thanks guys..I had my last smoke at 1/4 to six. I hope it will be m last. I'm starting right now. I have no more smokes in my car or in the house, or in my tool box..all gone. This is going to be hard..but very much worth it.

I plan to go cold turkey, I'm going to have a jar in the house. Anytime I feel like buying a pack of smokes I'll toss the 8 bucks into the jar instead. Hopefully by seeing the money grow it will make me think of somthing to save for.

Steve... buddy... Be strong... The biggest factor in the whole thing is whether you WANT to quit or not... i've been smoking for 15 years and i've tried several times, to quit, all unsuccessful... Why...? Because i didn't WANT to... Even with the now-everpresent smoker's cough and the occasional taste of blood and the rare cough that, literally, takes my breath away and i wonder if i'm gonna drop dead right there or not, i still continue... Because my desire to smoke is stronger than my desire to quit... If your heart isn't in it 100%, you're in for one helluva struggle...

On the other hand, if you really WANT this, then you already have it in the bag... The first three days are the hardest... After that, you're virtually home free... It's all about will; mind over matter... You can do it if you want it... Just remember that... Everytime you think about a cigarette, ask yourself if you really want it... Before you know it, you'll see a huge change in your life... The smell of other peoples' ***s will be stronger and you'll be very sensitive to it, but you'll enjoy the freedom that comes with not smoking... Food will start tasting better and a whole new world of oral and nasal bliss will open up to you...

i don't smoke so much, now; maybe a half a pack a day... But i used to smoke two and three packs a day, years ago, so i know where you're at... Even at 40 ***s a day, cold turkey is still your best option... Also, don't substitute anything for the cigarette... No excess gum chewing or consumption of candy - that **** is just a mind game... Don't let yourself fall into it... No patches, no pills, no nothing... Don't replace the cigarettes with anything, just remove them from your life... Best of luck to you, buddy, keep us posted...

At the very worst, carry something in your wallet, like a favorite poem, or interesting, little-known facts that you've always wanted to memorize or a picture of a Boxer... When that craving hits, the first few minutes are the hardest - if you can distract yourself with whatever you've stuck in your wallet or pocket, you'll be good to go... :)

Out of the 30 years I smoked I spent the last 20 trying to quit. I finally did 4 years ago by taking Welbutrin, a chemical equivelent to Zyban, for two months.

It isn't a replacement for nicotine and doesn't have any in it like the gum or patches. It helps you get the nicotine out of your body quickly! I figured if I didn't die from cancer I would die from emphasema. That is a guarentee for EVERY smoker.

It helped that I work in a smoke free envoironment and have no smokers at home. It also helps to stay out of bars which isn't hard for me as I quit drinking 15 years ago.

If I don't show positive for lung cancer in 8 years I think I'll have it made.

Out of all the things I have tried in my life, quitting smoking was the hardest.

One word of advice. If you don't succeed, keep trying. It takes "practice" to quit. Each time you try to quit you get better at it.

    Best of luck,
    DJ

Always in the background reading, you guys are like family. This thread is awesome, I'm 27 and have been smoking since I was about 15-16, and thats buying packs of cigarette's not bumming. So thats something like 5+10 carry the 2.......umm 12 years, thats embarrassing for a 27 year old.

This thread is giving me a new approach at it, ignore the craving as it lasts for only 2-5 minutes, seems to be the most logical to me. And what Carbon says, you have to want to quit yourself must preceed any advice. I as many have tried about 5 times to quit, hate the smell, the feeling, the indegestion, the slavery. Not that misery loves company but its nice to hear of others all over are thinking and going through the same thing. And I as many am a 12 or so cigs a day man.

So as usual for me, some more information that hopefully can get me on the path to quitting. We almost need to have an support group like AA to help shake this drug, its tougher than nonsmokers realize, and I envy that.

So good luck all from the bottom of my heart, hopefully I'll kick it myself.

    Take care,
    Josh
