http://blog.hemmings.com/index.php/2012/05/03/anatole-tony-lapine-gm-and-porsche-designer-dies/?refer=news Iconic designer and all around neat car guy Tony Lapine has passed away. Primarily responsible for styling of the 928 / 924 / 944 / 968 series. Used to keep a Miller 91 sprint car in his office. Eloquent spokesman for purity of design, in all disciplines, and in life. Also the 944 and 968. When I was growing up, those were high on my list. I saw a white 944 a few days ago, parked, and it's still a handsome car (and was the car everyone copied in the '80s).
I didn't know about Mr. Lapine (RIP). Having a 944 ad torn from a magazine in my school bag, I was a 944 fan growing up too. To me, it represented an affordable car from an iconic racing car brand; with its flared fenders, it had great looks and unmatched handling at that time. Interestingly enough, the journey to owning one took me a couple of decades and after more than a dozen other Porsches including more "prestigious" air-cooled ones and newer water-pumpers.
