Too Embarrassing! This evening I’m cruising down the beach enjoying the cool weather and find myself stopped at the traffic light in front of one of the casino resorts. Sitting next to me is a very nice yellow H2 Hummer which starts revving it’s engine. Although the 308 ain’t much for a drag race I figured I could take the H2. So I start revving up a little myself and take notice of around 30 people standing around on the corners (major intersection with cross walks for the casino suckers) of the intersection. So we have an audience to boot! The light goes green and we both nail it. I get the hole shot over the Hummer but he pulls back even when I shift to second. I wind second gear out pretty good and pull ahead about 4 feet before hitting 3rd. Just then the next traffic light catches us and we both come to a quick stop. The race lasted only a few seconds. The window of the hummer comes down and a nice lady pokes her head out and says “nice car”. We exchange compliments and the light turns green. I rev up to pull away in victory (at normal speed) and my engine sounds like a geo metro with no muffler! I swear it sounded like the Honda you see the 16 year old driving with the oversized muffler hanging out the back. I’ll bet she was laughing her a$$ off as she drove away. I pulled to the side and discovered the 3 bolts that hold one of the ends to one of the test pipes to the tubi had came off, apparently while I was at high rpm? I just installed the Tubi a month or so ago so I guess the bolts over a short time had vibrated off. So half the engine was going into the tubi and the other half was going straight out from the pressue pushing things past the donut. Nothing to do but drive it home so I make the 15-mile trip home sounding more or less like a constipated briggs and stratten, sears and robuck lawnmower engine. Tomorrow new bolts all the way around. PS… I still won the race!

Geez, drag racing a Hummer. Gimme a break! First thing to remember, your car is roughly 30 years old than the Hummer. Old technology vs. new technology. Second, if you don't absolutely trounce an SUV, you look like a jerk. If you blow it and don't win, you look like a huge jerk. Adds up to a lose/lose situation IMHO. Besides, what's the point?? 308s were never quick off the line. When people play with me on the street, even when I'm in my Corvette Z06 that's been modded and tuned to 500 hp, I laugh and wave them on. It means nothing to me if I win, and I won't give someone else the satisfaction of a street race, which I object to on principle anyway.

I do my talking and have my fun on the track with the Vette. My 308, 328 and Jaguar XKE are just fun driving cars. They are not for racing, so I don't waste my time and don't stress my cars. So off to NJ Motorsport Park on Wed. and Thurs. this week to kick some Ferrari butt. <grin> The Vette can't wait to get out there and hunt down some Challenge cars.

I guess I didn’t make it clear enough. My intent in the post was to inject a little humor. The “drag race” was laughable at best. An oversized, big tired, gas guzzling beast with 5 granny gears -vs- what is believed by the uneducated to be a warp factor 6 rocket but in reality “good looks but not much go”? I was cracking up just wondering what conversations were taking place by the bystanders as we sat there blowing smoke out the back. I’m sure we went over the posted speed limit but not by much before having to stand on the brakes. The entire event was less than 10 seconds. In short, we just made a lot of noise. And to my embarrassment, MY noise changed tune midway. Secondary was to educate to inspect those bolts a few weeks after making an exhaust installation.

Rob, Im guessing in the weeks since the install the nuts just vibrated free from the bolts and eventually they all fell out. I had the Tubi installed at a local muffler shop but I know they didn't use the factory bolts that go in the Cats because they were too short. It was too hot to really look at closely tonight. Tomorrow I will do a good inspection of all the attachments and likely replace all of the bolts and new lock washers/nuts. Joe

Yeah - I can understand the embarassment of the noise...my 328 is suddenly somewhat louder and I've been meaning to check...

Re the race - Hummer 1/4 mile times that I've been able to find are in the 16's+ The 308 should run off and leave them for dead. Maybe she had nitrous! :)

Doesn't it suck when disclaimers become necessary on these forum posts to keep the focus on topic/prevent derailment into scoldings and admonishments, etc?!

At least you beat her! I guess it shouldn't be necessary, but can you throw a lockwasher on when you bolt it back?

Lock washers ultimately won't stop exhaust nuts/bolts from rattling off. You need the copper "squished" type (like often used on exhaust manifolds), or the locking exhaust nuts that have the thin metal ring/perimeter in the same place where the nylon would be in a nyloc. :)

What you are speaking of are "Stover" nuts....
I might also suggest aircraft AN nuts. They actually stand up to the heat cycles just a bit better, but a bit more expensive.

Trivia question... what else did Mr. Stover invent? I'm sure you all had one at some time in your life.

Happened to me, take a look at the exhaust check valve in the emisions. Go to NAPA and tell them you need a check valve for a 1990 Chevy S10 Pickup. Around $8

Locking hex nuts will help, not sure on the catalyst systems, but the F40s use the type of tension spring arrangement at the bolts of the tri flanges, like you see at the header outlet in your photo..

308QVs use them too but Ricambi carries them as an F40 part number, IIRC.

Those springs allow the assembly to twist a little bit without working the nuts loose, try it.

I have the spring type bolts that were removed with the cats but they are too short for the test pipes for some reason. I've got a pretty good stock of AN hardware at the hanger Im going to go through this evening. And I may hit a couple of exhaust/muffler shops to see what they have. Im glad this happened before I re-installed the diaper.

Fit longer bolts and reuse the springs, and some fresh crimp nuts should button things up..

I've had the same experience with this "loud noise" but in my case it was the header blowing apart and lighting the engine compartment on fire....

Right next to the fuel tank..........

Mr Stover, inventer of the Stover nut (often, but falsely called stove nuts) is also the man that invented the coaster brake on your old bicycle... you know the one where you jam the pedal backwards and lock up the rear wheel and leave a 20 foot long black skid mark on your neighbor's sidewalk!!!

Now tell me you guys never did that...

    Rick
