I have a 348 that I bought about 10 years ago. After that, I began collecting classics. But now I'm torn. I would like to purchase another Ferrari, and as much as I think the 360 is one of the best looking F-cars, it has somehow lost it's mystique to me. I think they produced too many. I understand that they are running a business, but i worry that resale will eventually be very week with the 360, with so many being made. I am not looking to buy the car for resale, but in reality, when you are buying a 6 figure car, any smart business person should always think about their exit strategy. And I'm wondering if the depreciation on such a mass produced (in Ferrari terms) will be greater than on a 360.

With this in mind, and the beauty of the 355, I am now leaning more towards a 355 spyder, which in my opinion, is one of the best looking Ferrari's ever produced. I would like to get a Dino, but I don't want a garage queen. And I think it would be difficult to actually enjoy a Dino on a regular basis without feeling a lump in my stomach about "ruining" a classic.

Any input, positive or negative, is appreciated.

360cs is the one to get if you have $200k, IMO, the 355 GTS or coupe would be a better bet as there are too many 355 Spyders for sale on the market, so if you had to unload, the GTS would be easier

Haha, it seems like fellow Dino 246GT fans are Modena fans as well. I see a lot of similarity between these two cars as well, and that's why I also think they are some of the best looking cars ever built. If I ever buy a good condition Dino, it will probably end up sitting in a glass tube in my air conditioned livingroom. Now the 360 I would drive around in :). As much as I like the 355 engine sound, the pop-up lamps cramps its style. Modena is essentially a modernized 246GT. It would be great to own both side by side for a photoshoot.

I certainly agree w/your observation that there are plenty of 360's out there.
IMHO, the majority of them will not be six figure vehicles for long.

You can drive the cars, a Dino or whatever else interests you. Look at Napolis, although his income bracket might allow some extra indulgences over mere mortals, he drives some extrememly rare items.

If you have played with CCCA classics then you are aware that a 100pt car starts deteriorating the moment it is driven. Maybe a really nice example instead of a museum piece would solve the dilema.

I think the 360 is going the way of the 911 Turbo.......once a proud production supercar, now just an affordable daily exotic which you can buy at your local used car lot.

IMHO I would get the 355 Spyder, a more classic Ferrari style, and at a cheaper price, its a win/win.

anything with a Flat 12 would make an enjoyable experience & contrast nicely with your V8.

That and the fact that a convertible top completely ruins the 355... goes from amazing looking car to something less then desireable.

If $150K is doable, I would get a driver-condition, higher mileage Dino 246, enjoy it and restore later. If you need more power, the 308 QV is a driveable classic for 1/3 the cost. I think Dino 246 prices may wobble a bit, due to their recent massive run-up and the soft economy, but they should hold value well over time. The 308/328 is underpriced now, so a better buy, fun to drive, and not yet too valuable to drive.

My opinion is probably in the minority here, but I find the 360 getting a bit dated. Once the F430 replacement comes out in 2009 (?), I think you'll find the lustre wearing off that design idiom. I'd stick with the '70s/'80s Ferraris, nothing later.

I think the 348 is on its way to being the entry-level Ferrari for now, but the 360 will probably be the entry car within 5-6 years, IMO. If you're a 360 fan, maybe wait till they settle some more and just hang onto the 348 if it's running well.

Agree on the CS if budget allows. However, if Pirate75 is still 355 minded, I would recommend the Fiorano w/maunual trans.

You own a 348 and want a 355 but you're saying they over produced 360s?

From my research. Ferrari produced around 4500 348's from 89-94. They have produced over 10,500 360's. Not sure how accurate those numbers are, but I found them online and in print. What I'm saying is that although I think the 360 is one of the best cars Ferrari has produced, they haven't taken the depreciation hit as of yet. And with so many 360's being built, I think the depreciation will be more drastic than on other models. And taking a hit on 120,000 to a 150,000 car, I want the one with the least risk.

I f!@#ing love Ferrari, as a company, racing team, and mystique. But I think that the market for buying one is like sitting at the craps table. How about the people who paid over a million for a F40 in back in the day...don't want to be in that situation.

If I'm wrong on the numbers, feel free to chime in. I want the most accurate info in making a decision.

360's will be the everywhere v8 Ferrari's the 308 series was, except for the fact that fewer 308's survive after 30 + years of attrition. i think they will be a good value in about 5 more years. i also think a 6 speed coupe would be fun. the egear or whatever the paddy-cake shifter is called will be shunned in the future as you wont be able to maintain or repair the trans and all of its proprietary bits, cables and software.

**NONE** of my friends and peers of means care for all of this super complicated computer whiz bang stuff.

the old school cars are going to be what those of us in our late 20s and 30's work for to buy.

i dont care for much made after about 1989 or so.

flame me if you will, but too much of a good thing is still a bad thing. there will be too many Gallardos and 360's for the market to bear, without price corrections.

Totally disagree. Top down and her leather flying buttresses, the F355 is one of the best looking convertibles ever made. The 355 coupe is not in the same league. E.g., no full convertible Dinos or Miuras and both these cars look better than an F355 coupe.

Looking at it at as a enjoyable car and a business decision it is simple. The numbers on 360 production are high, so will the 430, and its soon to be seen replacement. If you are longing for a newer car you can drive and enjoy the 355 is the way to go. Their values are already around 60-85 depending, the 360 will soon not be far off of this. They are currently around 100-150 and will soon be 80-110 cars. So if you can wait you are better off doing so for a few years and enjoying a 355 in the mean time. The 360 will be much cheaper soon enough.

If you want good resale in the future, it's probably a good time to buy likes of 348 and Testarossa. :)

Buy what you want - you can't take it with you. But for the sake of the thread, why not get a high-mileage-but-well-sorted Euro 360 that's already been imported and converted...? Imported and converted Euro cars trade at noticeable discounts compared to their US-spec counterparts.

Just because the production numbers are high enough to not make it a highly coveted collectible does not mean the prices will plummet.

I maintain that you should look at the V8 series. What's the value of a 348, for example?

It's pretty good resale value for cars 15-25 years old. I don't care how you cut it.

Cars are not usually assets. They're liabilities and they depreciate in most cases. Once one can accept that, one can enjoy his cars more freely.

It's a "pay to play" game with cars. With a Ferrari, you're at least fortunate enough to keep a very high percentage of the car's original value.
