I was draining the oil in preperation for my engine out servie when I noticed tht pratically nothing came out of the tank. So i proceeded to fill it so I could find the leak. Well I think I over filled it. when I started it it began to smoke real bad Oil was poouring out of the air filter housing. I shut if off and drained all the oil. I am scared to dath to restrt it due to possibly hydralocking it. Is this even possible by over filling it?
    Thanks Mike

You would not hydraulic the engine, unless it has had a gutful of oil in a particular cylinder/s. How much oil did you put in by the way? You had oil pouring out the air filter housing?? Bloody hell :( My suggestion would be to remove the spark plugs, all of them and wind the engine over and see how much oil,if any, sprays out of the spark plug holes. Messy job,but has to be done in this case brother.

Sorry if you already knew this...there are two plugs you have to remove to drain the oil. If you oly took the one at the back off you should have gotten amost no oil. The one towards the front of the engine will give you the bulk of the oil.

Again, sorry if you already knew this.

you should be fine . been there done that , caught it quick. remember not to drain the gearcase oilo ,the engine oil is the larger allen under the metal shroud, directly below the belts .just fire it up and let it idle until smoke clears .

I drove it for a few miles an it is still smoking like crazy. I did remove all the plugs and got most of the oil out. How did the oil get in the air cleaner houseing to begin with? How long before it stop smoking?

Your fine if you caught it and drained it quick enough. Drain the engine from the plug there and then the oil tank. Fill with oil and start...you will be fine.

I actually know a guy who filled a Boxer with 25 quarts YES 25 QUARTS of oil because he thought he was low. That hydrolocked it and needed a rebuild BUT he drove it until it locked.

    You are fine.

Sorry Mike for your problems. Read the owners manual(for future ref.) on the oil section it will tell you what you need to know about the drain pionts and how to check the oil level. Regards, Vern

If you only drained the oil in the tank you only got out a quart or two, you need to also drain the oil in the engine ( THE PLUG ON THE FRONT PASS. SIDE OF THE ENGINE NOT THE ONE ON THE BOTTOM).

Let me explain what happenned. I did not realize that the oil must drain into the engine when the car is sitting. I paniced when I only got a few drops of oil from the tank. I then proceeded to fill the tank until it read full on the dipstick. I had no idea the tank would be almost empty when the car was sitting. Live and learn I geuss. I am going to run the car some more this afternoon and see if I can get rid of all the oil. I then will proceed (with caution) and start removing the engine). So how exactly did the oil get into my air cleaner housing? IS there a breather or something?

Why not drain the oil all together and start removing the engine. I don't see how running the engine with potentially too much oil is going to help. If I were going to do alot of my own maintenance I would do a search here with '348 maintenance' as the search and read it all. I am sure there would be plenty of valuable info there. Good luck.
