I guess it just pisses me off when I see these folks take the tool kits out of the cars and hold on to them to sell them later. I can't believe that they can afford to buy the cars and then cheap enough to take the kit and sell it after they get rid of the car. I see this 365 tool kit on ebay that is going for $11k and someone who should have had the kit when he bought the car is now going to shell out another $11 or $12k for a bunch of cheap tools with the ferrari name on them. As you can guess I got stuck without the tool kit when I got my 77 and I am not willing to shell out another $500 for a used kit. Just wanted to blow off some steam here. Another other comments out there. Enjoy the ride.

I am a fellow 77 owner nad my story is a little bit different. My tools disappeared and I was left with even cheaper replacements inside the case. I finally broke down and purchased a new set with case from the UK. As you said it was $500 I didn't need to spend. I guess the rule of thumb going forward will be craftsmen in the trunk and originals in the garage.

Not passing along the toolkit is unfortunate. The sad thing is that there are a lot of first-time f-car buyers that don't know what to ask for if it is missing from the deal.

But what about all the other items that come with a car? Modern 360's and 430's come with several extra pieces, such as the red key fob, card with the master unlock codes for car and radio, various owner manuals, car cover, original window sticker, the VIP (vehicle identification passport), etc.

When the car is sold to a new owner, should everything go with it? For example, should the VIP book go with it?

The flip side of all this is what happened to me when I bought a ratty old 250GT many years ago. I didn't have any idea of the value of the tool kit etc. so I neve thought to ask about it. When I got the car home and did a through cleaning, I found the tools, jack, and owners manual, under some rags and newspapers in the trunk.

It is sad - reflects a difference between guys who view themselves as custodians of something special versus guys worshipping an extra buck (or eleven thousand of them...)

I was fortunate, got everything from the tools to the jack kit to the factory key fob with my 328. If I ever sell her, the next owner will have everything along with the story you just told.

    I hate that.

My story is a little different. When I traded in my 2003 360 Modena for a 2006 F430 F1 the agreement with the dealer was I could keep the charger that was in the 360. I found out a week ago that my F430 is not wired at the car for the ferrari charger. Now I have a charger that I cannot use. It is useless other than the pretty leather to look at.

Maybe that happened to the eBay guy ?

    Ugh

Can you tell me the ebay number of this auction. $11,600 is getting into 330/275 tool kit pricing and they are much more involved kits.

While its unfortunate that we sometimes dont get those items with our car, we should all be happy in the fact that the people who keep them generally take a lot better care of them than those who leave them rusting in the trunk. It would be a lot worse if they were not only removed from the car, but lost altogether.

Secondly, if your not aware that the tools or other items that came with the car arent there when you buy the car second hand, tough titty. I could probably count on one hand the cars I have bought in 35 years that had a owners manual and a complete spare tire change set. Tool kits? Most motorcycles I grew up with were missing the tool kit 20 minutes after some kid removed it and infiltrated it into thier crummy tool box.

Third, you gotta really be facinated at the prices people pay for these crap tools. I mean, $200 for a screwdriver I would have thrown away 20 years ago?

Another side to the story, not necessarily something I would subscribe to. The odds are if you offer your pristine Ferrari for sale complete with all tools & books most buyers will still try and beat you down on the price in the face of protestations that perhaps comparable cars for sale are incomplete. So the seller thinks, "what the hell, the buyers won't pay for the perceived value, screw 'em". Rather like in real estate when all the light bulbs and loo paper are taken away by the vacating owner who has been screwed out of the last dollar for his home. Always 2 sides of the coin.

I've reached the age where I go the other direction. When I sold my Celica AllTrac, the guy came looking for the car. He also got the "green book" service manual set, the spare McP struts, the spare aircon computer --- whether he wanted them or not. ;) I went through the garage and cleaned out all the Toyota stuff.

I'm still finding left over spare parts for cars I haven't owned for 20 years.

So now *everything* goes with the car. :p

I got my tool-kit when I bought my 348, When I bought the car the Dealer was even kind enough to give me a nice Ferrari shirt and hat of which I still have in the plastic wrap to pass on to the next owner if or when I decide to sell it of course as well as the tool-kit :D

I did not really know much about the car when I bought it, but I was fortunate to have an honest seller that included everything including extensive service records from day one.

My car was stripped too of anything valuable - tool kit, owners manual, key fobs, keys. I mean who the hell needs to keep a key fob?? It doesn't even say Ferrari on it! I wouldn't even think of trying to buy the tools or manual on Ebay, not worth it to me at those prices.

I think it indicates the kind of person the car belonged to........both of mine came with full books and tools and service papers....

The one set I use is pretty shabby and worn the other set is still like new.....but I suppose rusting......

My luggage set came from a car deal where the new owner wouldn't add the money though.......but I would not treat tool sets or books that way....

Unless you are going to show the car who cares IMO, I tried using one of the screwdrivers from my old 328 kit and it promptly broke, they are really cheap tools and worthless except the pliers. Before breaking the screwdriver I didn't know they were just for show and not to use.

Not necessarily. In some cases a car is bought with no tools, jack kit ect... and that owner buys them at market price. Then, when he later sells the car, he either sells them separately to the buyer or later to someone else...what's wrong with that?

Hanging on to everything that originally came with the car is a relatively new phenomenon. Back in 1962 when the local play boy bought a 250 GT I doubt keeping the original keyfob or radio tag with the car was of paramount importance to him.

Like somebody else posted, be glad someone thought to hang onto them and they are still out there to buy.

The toolkit that came with the Ferrari is part of the complete car.

When a seller sells a Ferrari to a newbie without a toolkit, and the seller makes no mention of the missing toolkit, then IMHO that is fraud. The toolkit is a part of the car, and should be sold with the car. It is no different than if someone purchased a DVD player and the seller withheld the remote. This is grounds to force a return of the purchase price.

Bullfighter - It took me 4 years to finally get the previous owner of 71403 to give up one of the screw drivers. I'm glad you appreciate it. However, when I sold to George H., I was missing one of the accessory belts as I used it (they start making popping noises after a while). You should have 3 belts in there.

Frank - You are right. Not all tool hording folks do it for the money either. My friend David who had a carb 308 loved his car and wanted a momento. In the late '80s when prices skyrocketed, he sold the car without the steering wheel, which is on his garage wall in memory of his youth.

There is no need to keep the tools for any other reason. The tollerences really suck. The wrenches did save me once. I had just replaced said belt and did not do a good job of tightenting the main compressor bolt. When driving throught he mountains with others (Terry, Dr. Tommy & Brian), we pulled over to rest and Tommy noticed the bolt sticking out (about to drop). Noting the importance of bringing tools on an aggressive drive, make sure they are strapped down really well. I know a fellow (not mentioning) who's tools got loose and really damaged the 1/4 panel from the inside.
