Just wondering who you think are the top 5 best F1 drivers right now, assuming they all drove the same car and had equally competent race engineers/strategists/pit crew/etc.?

    My admittedly uneducated opinion:

    1. Russell
    2. Max
    3. LeClerc
    4. Sainz
    5. Alonso (and yes, I know Ocon has more points than him - still think Alonso is a better driver)

    1. Verstappen
    2. Russell
    3. Norris
    4. Leclerc
    5. Perez

I really think Carlos is starting to step up. Over a lap its Max or Charles. over a race Max . Lewis is very good in a great car, like Russel. Charles is very technical. Look at his pole drives. Max, Carlos, Lewis and Russel probably in a race in equal cars. Alonso is a machine. So much experience. He can work with anything. I would love to see him in the 499. for Ferrari.

Leclerc and Lewis neck and neck. Leclerc still makes costly mistakes, Lewis has shown once again that the moment he's in a pack he clearly has blinkers on and crashes into everything. Lewis showed last year he also makes mistakes when he's challenged.

Norris nipping at the heals of Alonso if not ahead of him already, but no wins vs Alonso's ridiculous race pace and determination puts him behind Alonso wins and titles.

Russell right behind Lando, very consistent and beat Lewis this year.

Our lists are pretty similar, Bas. I have reservations about both Mercedes drivers. When challenged Lewis doesn't leave racing room, he will run his opponent(often a teammate) wide. Russell just has too many collisions, though his Q3 red flag in Brazil worked out nicely for him.

Agree. Last year I'd have put lewis 2nd, that he improved after 2013. This year has shown it's not the case, and being beaten by Russell in his own team is definitely not expected. When Leclerc eeks out the errors he's right there with Max.

I would actually put Sainz next to Russell as equal 6th. After the opening rounds he's been really good once again this year.

Max drives with absolute confidence in his car and in his team. If Charles had that same confidence they would be equals IMO.

Agreed. And I don't blame Leclerc for not having complete confidence in his team giving their weekly antics.

    But seriously

1a/1b. Max and Lewis(order depends on preference, but they are basically equal and notably above the rest for the complete package)
    3. LeC
    4. Lando(may be higher, his rain races are impressive)

Without ranking 1 thru 5...just at random. The only one who gives 100% without drama, and rarely if ever complains about his car is Alonzo. He has made me a fan, and I truly put him among the top 5 drivers on the F1 grid today. Russell is also there, with balls and ambition and his skill will grow. Max because his results prove it. He fought just as hard when the car wasn't the best, he never gives up. Lewis has incredible skills and I don't have to like him to respect him...even if he is not at his peak he is one of the top five. I'll split the fifth spot between Sainz and Leclerc...Sainz just isn't the faster of the two, but I think he is the stronger... Leclerc has moments of great speed, but I don't think he has the heart of a tiger. If we had a 24 year old Stirling Moss, he would be my fifth choice.

Currently I have to put Max, Lando at the top. Leclerc, Hamilton, Russell are close. I have'nt seen enough strenght and grit from Leclerc race wise. Sainz seems to be more consistent race day.
